The original pilot episode starred Ricki Lake as Frankie Heck. Most of the cast was replaced after that production, with Atticus Shaffer (Brick) being the only actor remaining. See more »

Goofs

The interior layout of the house differs from the outside plan of the house. Standing out front of the house there is the family room on the left, then the front door and dining room in the center, then the garage on the right. The inside floorplan has a hall going to the right leading to the bedrooms. To the right is the garage, so the bedrooms for Sue, Axl, and Brick would have to be in the garage. Some scenes do show a small extension on the right side of the house, but it is too small to be the boys room and could not include Sue's room at all. See more »

A Home Run
9 April 2010 | by barbadosdagnySee all my reviews

Thank you, ABC, for putting a great group of comedy writers together to support this all star cast. Barbara Heaton as the used car saleslady mom and the janitor from Scrubs as the dad are the best parents I've seen on t.v. in a long time. The 3 children are given meaty characterizations to play and I hope they will win many awards. The kids and the other supporting cast (including Chris Kattan and the car lot boss) couldn't have been cast better. Every show gives me old fashioned belly laughs and inspiration that, like this family struggling to survive in the middle class (the reason for its name, not named for the middle of the country in which it takes place) we can all learn a lesson in what makes families strong.
