'The Apparition' ('L'Apparition'): Film Review

'The Apparition' ('L'Apparition'): Film Review
Like a Dan Brown movie made with more naturalistic, art house intentions, The Apparition (L’Apparition) combines a mystery plot involving the Catholic church with the continent-hopping story of a traumatized war reporter seeking the truth at all costs.

The result is a film that intrigues in its initial stages, with Cannes best actor winner Vincent Lindon (The Measure of a Man) delivering another Gary Cooper-esque stoical turn, but then overstays its welcome and fails to deliver in the final stretch. Still, writer-director Xavier Giannoli (Marguerite) reveals his knack for making small-scale epics that offer plenty of atmosphere and all-around strong...

Memento adds Gabriel Mascaro's 'Overgod', racy 'Curiosa' to Efm slate (exclusive)

Memento adds Gabriel Mascaro's 'Overgod', racy 'Curiosa' to Efm slate (exclusive)
The films join slate also featuring Malgorzata Szumowska’s Mug and Nicolas Pesce S&M comedy Piercing.

Memento Films International (Mfi) has boarded world sales on Brazilian filmmaker Gabriel Mascaro’s “erotic gospel film” Overgod and French director Lou Jeunet’s Curiosa, set against the backdrop of the erotic photography scene in Belle Epoque Paris, ahead of the Efm.

The new acquisitions join an already impressive slate also featuring Malgorzata Szumowska’s Golden Bear contender Mug and Nicolas Pesce S&M comedy Piercing, which just made a buzzy debut at Sundance.

Described by Mascaro’s own production company Desvia as “an erotic gospel film”, Overgod revolves around Joana, a 40-year-old notary and devoted Evangelical Christian.

Outside her day job, Joana uses her biblical knowledge to bring estranged couples closer through their sexuality, inviting them to participate in the group sessions of ‘Divine Love’, a dissident wing of the local church focused on rescuing sexual enjoyment as a means

Through the film, Drexel has underprivileged Arizona locals share their hopes and fears.

Indie Sales described the documentary as a “vertiginous dive in the heart of the United States.” The company will kick off sales at the UniFrance Rendez-Vous With French Cinema, which kicks off Thursday in Paris.

For “America,” Drexel re-teamed with cinematographer Sylvain Leser, with whom he worked on “On the Edge of the World,” which explored the lives of homeless people in Paris.

French Director Xavier Giannoli on ‘The Apparition,’ Christian Love, Directing Vincent Lindon (Exclusive)

French Director Xavier Giannoli on ‘The Apparition,’ Christian Love, Directing Vincent Lindon (Exclusive)
Xavier Giannoli’s “The Apparition” begins in the Middle East with a blinding light. It is not that of a religious apparition but a bomb that leaves war correspondent Jacques (Vincent Lindon, “The Measure of Man,” “Rodin,” “Welcome”) dazed and deaf in one ear and his photographer and best friend dead. The latter spent his whole life trying to prove the violence and madness of men through his photos, Jacques says later. Now he has proved it with his death.

Humbled, guilt-ridden and deflated, Jacques returns from the Middle East to France, boards himself up in his home and then accepts a mission from the Vatican, to head an canonical investigation into the claims made by a young woman, Anna (Galatéa Bellugi “Keeper,” “Heal The Living”), living in south-east France, that the Virgin Mary has appeared to her, pleading that mankind should aid those suffering.

What follows is a kind of pilgrim’s progress, where Jacques

Dany Boon’s “La Ch’tite Famille,” Laurent Tirard’s “Return of the Hero” and Philippe le Guay’s “Normandie Nue” feature at the 20th UniFrance Rendez-Vous With French Cinema, which runs Jan. 18-22 in the lap-of-luxury at Paris’ InterContinental Le Grand Hotel.

“In all honesty, this looks like a good year in terms of quality of titles,” said Gilles Renouard, UniFrance co-deputy director.

On paper at least, that can be put down to two factors at least: the strength in depth and, crucially, breadth of France’s comedy offering at the Rendez-Vous, and a clutch of movies which showcase some of France’s finest actors: Vincent Lindon (“The Apparition”), Daniel Auteuil (“Le Brio”) and Karin Viard (“Jealous”) are just three. Following, 10 takes – and one big question raised – by this year’s edition:

“The Rendez-Vous is a great place to catch comedies, which France does very well,” Renouard said. This

Ben Affleck And Geoff Johns Rumored To Have Complete Creative Control Over The Solo Batman Movie

According to the newest episode of Heroic Insider, hosted by Hollywood producer Daniel Alter (The Apparition, Hitman: Agent 47) and Heroic Hollywood's Umberto  'ElMayimbe' Gonzalez, DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns and Oscar winner Ben Affleck will have "complete creative control" over the solo Batman film.  Which logically indicates that Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Charles Roven or any other frequent Dceu overseer has no say on what Johns and Affleck ultimately cook up.  Alter and Gonzalez further report that Affleck is taking the lead and Johns is more of a consultant, providing necessary references to comic book lore and not necessarily shaping the story.   After months of speculation, WB recently confirmed that Affleck will indeed star, write and direct the solo Batman film.  The film is currently without a release date but Warner Bros. has snagged two dates in 2018 and 2019 for future Dceu installments.  It's probable that one of

Ex to Grind: Dante’s ZomCom Never Finds Its Pulse

Zombies are difficult subject matters for the screen. A staple of a popular subgenre, original narrative inspiration is rare in a field of low yield thrills from contemporary films unable to match the iconic masters, like early George Romero. Of course, every now and then, something innovative and exciting comes along, such as Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later (2002), and it’s surprisingly energetic sequel. But increasingly, like all glorious horror tropes, comedy has taken the place of tension. Sometimes, in the right hands, this can also be inviting. So it’s disappointing to see a director like Joe Dante, the man who balanced these elements deftly in classics likes Piranha (1981), Gremlins (1984), and The ‘Burbs (1989) turn up with his latest, Burying the Ex. With its overtly fresh faced young cast and first time script from Alan Trezza (adapted from his own

Joel Silver’s Dream Venice Post Office Project Is Stalled and In Debt (Exclusive)

Politicos, business titans and stars gathered for a press gala in the fall of 2012 to hear the big news: Joel Silver would bring his movie company to Venice’s historic post office. To hear the producer and his backers talk, the move would unleash a creative renaissance for both Silver and the beach community.

“The man who brought us ‘The Matrix,’ ‘Lethal Weapon’ and ‘Predator’ will have an address that matches his grand imagination,” Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa proclaimed to a crowd that included actor Tobey Maguire and former Yahoo chief Terry Semel, his longtime pal from their days at Warner Bros. Silver pledged to “help change the paradigm of Hollywood,” by turning a refurbished Venice post office into a creative hub, a center for technological innovation and a meeting place for friends and neighbors.

Nearly two and a half years after that elaborate rollout, though, work on Silver

Todd Lincoln on his surprise 'V/H/S: Viral' segment and how the 'powers-that-be' ruined 'The Apparition'
Think you've seen "V/H/S: Viral"? Not all of it, as it turns out. Titled "Gorgeous Vortex," the visually-dazzling short was inspired by "avante-garde video artists, fashion photography, old Italian Horror movies, George Lucas’s early experimental films, and the writings of J.G. Ballard and Jean Baudrillard" -- quite a mashup of influences! Lincoln spoke with HitFix recently about the film, which journeys into a cryptic, sensual world of murder, the occult and, yes, fashion models. Curious? Here's a teaser: In addition to an in-depth discussion of the short, Lincoln also provided more insight into his 2012 feature film "The Apparition,
