What in the fresh hell?
aarpcats22 January 2022
Just before her execution, Aileen Wuornos told Nick Broomfield, the British film maker who documented her life with hundreds of hours of tape and believed she was so mentally ill that the State of Florida was killing a child that, ºThey will all make money on me when I'm gone."

This film is proof. It's a disgusting exploitation of the life of a woman who suffered through a childhood that would make Dickens weep. It does nothing to elevate the lives of the men she killed nor does it show the way Wuornos herself was failed by child welfare services and her defense attorney.

Too soon, folks. Too soon. The earnest young actress tries to save it. But too soon.

Skip it. Watch "Monster," or Brookfield's outstanding "Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer,"

Warning: Spoilers
Aileen never shot her husband and she definitely didn't kill her husbands business partner and son. I also know she never killed her brother. She might of said she committed these crimes... but a little research will prove these events never happened. And if you notice right before the credits roll. We find out Ailen didn't start her murder spree until 1989. 12 years after her divorce 🤔

More of a 90s "B" movie
thejdrage23 January 2022
This is one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time! Would have been mad if I'd paid for it. Seriously bad overacting with an equally bad script. Tobin Bell was good as the Commodore. This movie does portray Wuornos as a smart and witty woman who had incredibly crappy social skills combined with a hair trigger temper, and then it digresses into a bizarre combination of soap opera and a bad noir movie.

This cannot be near the truth, but "based on", so watch it that way. When you want bubble gum for the brain or need background noise - this is the movie for you!

The "daytime soap opera" version of the story.
Angry_Santa10 October 2021
For anyone even vaguely interested in the real story - or even interested in real writing and acting - do yourself a favour and watch Monster (2003).

In the 2003 movie, the producers/writers/director went to great lengths to make sure the movie was guided by real facts, and picked a cast capable of delivering performances so strong that at times it seemed more like a documentary.

American Boogeywoman by contrast delivers little more than you'd expect to find in gossip magazines, with production/writing/acting more at home in "Days of Our Lives" than in a movie.

Seriously, give this one a miss.

Almost a big a tragedy as Aileen's life
flurry-7902211 October 2021
I really don't understand the point of this movie, why they even made it. It's almost as if they had another script with just a run-of-the-mill thriller and then just attached Aileens name to it. Nothing about this movie is true to life except for the fact that yes, Aileen has been married to a millionaire at one point, and the relationship ended after she hit this older man with his own walking cane. This movie is such a tragedy since the girl playing Aileen actually does a very good job at it. This entire movie is just a treasure trove of missed opportunity. They pitched it as a "prequel" to the movie Monster but then why not also make it that? For instance they had her brother in there for maybe a few minutes, but there was more to that story. She did not kill her brother like this movie suggests, she loved her brother, a lot. Then there is her youth, her up bringing, everything that they just did not use for this story. At all. If you want to learn all about Aileen I suggest you check out the documentaries "The Selling of a serial killer" and "Life and death of a serial killer" both by the same creator. I wish the creators of this movie had seen those documentaries and used the information in them. This movie could have been great, instead we're stuck now with this work of fiction that watches more like a soap opera. Its made up, it isn't real, and it even does a very poor job at that.

Fictional Garbage
davidlohr21 January 2022
Because the truth wasn't bad enough they had to fabricate large parts of the story? Whoever made this apparently flunked out of film school. The writing, acting and cinematography are terrible.

Watch paint dry instead!
scotsdavy10 October 2021
You will have more fun watching paint dry instead. Unknown actors talking utter garbage and haven't a clue what they are supposed to do. In fact, best part of this movie is when it ends. Terrible1.

Absolutely great acting at the beginning by penny wise's sister and then it all went downhill from there. Its like a really really bad poison ivy and for anyone who hasn't seen poison ivy it's not good yet it's Oscar material compared to this.

Where to begin
hartwellmathew12 October 2021
This Film is Freaking Mess, the writing is awful, it's rushed, its just fictionalized version of Aileen's life, Farrands should be Ashamed of the the films he makes and Poor Peyton she honestly deserved better, she's an excellent actress but she didn't need to be in this movie, Peyton should get on the phone and have a word with her agent.

Is this a spoof?
gurumaggie21 January 2022
The most wooden acting since pinocchio was on stage, whoever wrote this should be ashamed. The daughter of the commodore or Pennywise sister as she is called in other reviews, is 37 and it shows.

The only good thing is Nazareth love hurts in the soundtrack, I have honestly seen better acting from sock puppets.

Duh it wasn't meant to be a documentary
gustheaffen1 February 2022
Idiocracy is here, of course this wasn't a true story. They took a short marriage Aileen had in the 70s to a wealthy older man that lasted only 9 weeks because she beat him as was portrayed in the film. However, they obviously made it a more colorful and somewhat comical story. Probably one of the better of these types of movies released lately.

You're Missing the Point!
diana_m_j24 January 2022
This film is based on the delusional ramblings of Aileen when she was on death row. Most of the film is FICTION...but it is a recreation of what SHE said actually happened. Therefore...take it for what it is. It isn't a biography, and it isn't based on facts. It gives you a glimpse into the mind of a serial killer who was either a compulsive liar, or had lost touch with reality. Or perhaps a little bit of both.

I give it 7 stars for the worthy effort of the actors, primarily Peyton List. Otherwise, I wouldn't have rated it so high.

I can not believe how horrible this movie was!!!

I watched the movie "Monster"a few years ago and it was fantastic, Charlize Theron was amazing and the way they made her look, it was like looking at the real Aileen. I thought this movie was going to be on the same line as "Monster" But this movie was a joke!! The acting was like watching homemade movies with wanna be actors, and the facial expressions from the actress were way to extreme, she looked like an idiot!!!

I guess it's all about who's doing the real acting and the director!!

SAVE YOUR MONEY.

Save your time.
FluffydaMovieslayer21 October 2021
If you want to watch a movie about Aileen - watch Monster and her real life interviews etc.

Don't bother with this - I have no idea why this whole thing didn't end up on the cutting room floor.

Embarrassing
WorthlessKnowledge21 January 2022
Peyton List is a beautiful young actress who was really good in the Kobra Kai series. Hopefully this movie will become known as the low point in her budding career, cause she can only go up from this disaster. Hope to see much more of her in the future.

Love you, Peyton ---- but I'm really embarrassed for you.

Why again???
Crit6210 October 2021
A very much better version has been done. "Monster" with Charlize Theron way better , I think she won an Oscar for her performance. This is some D movie dressed up version of what really happened. Save your money for more pop corn elsewhere.

Everything about this movie is gross. Everyone involved should be ashamed. I can't believe this actually got made and that anyone involved thought it was a good idea. Yikes.

The worst acting ever!
sherripadgitt25 January 2022
I tried to allow myself to give this some redeeming qualities, but I couldn't find any. The acting is more than terrible, it is horrific. The woman who plays Aileen does not resemble her in the least. No one can act in this film. You can tell they are just reading their scripts and don't really care.

The absolute worst
datwifeytype-6685915 October 2021
This was the worst film I've seen. It's bargain basement at best. It compares to a low budget lifetime film. I would not recommend at all. Zero facts except for the millionaire husband. Everything else was completely false. If you want a actual good movie about aileen, I highly recommend monster.

Give this one a chance 😃
tracyerinjones26 January 2022
If you grew up in the 80s you'll totally get this movie. I actually enjoyed it. Yes its a little sappy but that is the point! They did a great job bringing the viewer into this era. I loved the fashion and the music. A very different look at a young Aileen.

I felt like a kid in the theater back in 1980!

An unreliable narrator gives a story about Aileen Wuornos's 'first' murders
Tweekums26 January 2022
This film opens with infamous serial killer Aileen Wuornos giving an interview the day before her execution. She tells the interviewer a story about her brief marriage to a wealthy man in Florida in 1976; which if she is to be believed included a number of killings that took place well before the documented murder spree that began in 1989. Most of the film takes place in 1976; here she is befriended by Jennifer Fell who introduces her to her father Lewis... weeks later they are married. Jennifer isn't the only one to suspect that Aileen is up to no good; Lewis's friend and business associate Victor Miller starts looking into her past... clearly it won't end well.

I'm not sure why this needs to be linked to real life serial killer Aileen Wuornos; the story would have been just as effective, and somewhat less trashy, if it featured entirely fictional characters. The events in the seventies, few of which beyond her marriage to Lewis Fell, actually happened are quite entertaining. Had it been about a fictional character, and not told in flashback, there would have been a greater sense of jeopardy; as it is we know Aileen must survive the events of 1976. Some of the acting is rather weak, the poor dialogue doesn't help, but Peyton List is pretty good in the lead role and Tobin Bell is solid as Lewis. There are several nods to classic films... the way the scene of Lewis falling down the stairs is shot is straight out of 'Psycho'. Overall I'd hardly call this a must see but similarly wouldn't say it anywhere near the 'worst movie ever'... if you want to kill slightly under ninety minutes and don't mind its trashiness it is perfectly fine.

harryokin29 October 2021
Whoever did the makeup on the older Wuornos should be up for an Oscar, the film itself was absolutely dire. I have never been so happy for a film to end and put me out of my misery.

Just plan awful
zandergasparre11 October 2021
I'm really shocked that Toby was in this, his acting is so much better than this low budget crap. Idk why they keep making movies about these killers, and most don't end up accurate. The chick who played Aileen was god awful. Don't watch it!

Shame on you Netflix
killercola25 January 2022
That's it, I'm done with Netflix. As their prices go up the quality which was already low has gotten even worse. How dare they show crap like this to subscribers and charge a monthly premium. I'm done. Netflix really does suck.
