Wes Anderson is the singularly talented filmmaker who has quickly gone from indie darling to Oscar favorite in just a little over two decades, creating a number of quirky, visually splendid classics. Let's take a look back at all 11 of Anderson's films, ranked worst to best.
Anderson made his directorial debut with "Bottle Rocket" (1996), released when he was just 27-years-old. He received his first Oscar nomination five years later: Best Original Screenplay for "The Royal Tenenbaums" (2001). He followed that eight years later with a Best Animated Feature bid for the stop-motion film "Fantastic Mr. Fox" (2009). Another Best Original Screenplay nomination followed for "Moonrise Kingdom" (2012). Then he hit the Oscar jackpot with Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay nominations for "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (2014) -- well, almost hit the jackpot, since he went home empty-handed from those awards, losing all three to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for "Birdman." Few directors have a style as distinctive as Wes Anderson. Having spent decades crafting a unique look for his movies, he went from making somewhat risky films to becoming one of the most sought-after figures in the industry. Very few people like him have existed in the film industry, being so authentically themselves that they end up creating a subgenre of their own.
Being behind classics like The Grand Budapest Hotel, Asteroid City, and Moonrise Kingdom, it is not surprising that fans are waiting for news on any of his movies. Most recently, the trailer for his upcoming film, The Phoenician Scheme, was released, and naturally, it was a conversation starter.

The cast of Wes Anderson players continues to be one of the starriest rosters in all of Hollywood. Whenever the director sets up a new project, he has an increasing spread of go-to names ready to enter his meticulously-crafted worlds (Bill Murray! Jason Schwartzman! Tilda Swinton!), whilst always expanding it with new faces. In The Phoenician Scheme, Anderson’s follow-up to 2023’s Asteroid City, he’s welcoming someone who’s long been an Anderson acolyte, but has never worked with the man himself: Michael Cera.
Here, Cera plays Björn, a Norwegian tutor hired to educate the sons of Benicio Del Toro’s businessman Zsa-Zsa Korda – a role that unexpectedly takes him across the world with Korda, and the businessman’s daughter, Mia Threapleton’s nun Liesl. For Cera, The Phoenician Scheme was a chance to work with a filmmaker he’s long admired. “I saw The Royal Tenenbaums in the theatre.

The wait for the new Wes Anderson (Asteroid City) movie is almost over, and there is nothing better than a trailer to hype up fans of the filmmaker. Last week, CinemaCon attendees were treated to a first look at the highly anticipated The Phoenician Scheme, and now we can all get a sense of what the story will be like and, of course, dive again into Anderson's colorful and extremely symmetric world. The movie is set to premiere in June.
While details of The Phoenician Scheme are still kept under wraps, we do know that the movie will center on a fragile father-daughter relationship and there's quite a bit of action going on. The movie's brief official logline calls it "the story of a family and a family business." It also reveals that Benicio Del Toro (One Battle After Another) will play Zsa-zsa Korda, one of the richest men in Europe.

Per Variety, Armstrong's new film is officially titled Mountainhead and is set to premiere on Max on May 31. The film was announced back in January and began filming in March, making it one of the quicker turnarounds in recent memory. The film is currently set to wrap production this week. Mountainhead serves as Armstrong's first project since Succession wrapped up its Emmy-winning run back in 2023. Armstrong also penned the script for the film.
Mountainhead follows a group of billionaire friends and is set "against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis," per the official logline. This summer, get ready for a whole new dino-filled adventure with Jurassic World Rebirth, a film that promises to take the franchise in a bold and terrifying new direction as new dinos and monsters descend on humanity, causing unprecedented mayhem.
During their CinemaCon presentation, Universal Pictures brought out director Gareth Edwards and stars Scarlett Johansson ("Zora Bennett") and Mahershala Ali ("Duncan Kincaid") to introduce their never-before-seen new footage from the upcoming blockbuster.
With all three of the previous entries topping $1 billion, it's a pretty safe bet that Rebirth will likely also reach those heights, especially with fans eager to see this bold and scary new direction as well as box office superstar Scarlett Johansson leading the charge.
Johansson is a longtime Jurassic superfan, telling the CinemaCon audience, “It has been a lifelong dream to be in a Jurassic movie.," before adding how she did everything in her power to be cast in this film,...

A lot of the conversation at CinemaCon 2025 has been about trying to find the elusive answer to the question of how to get audiences back in theaters for films that aren’t franchises and horror…the sort of offerings that made up the vast majority of Universal’s CinemaCon presentation on Wednesday afternoon.
The presentation, which kicked off with an elegant, 50-piece live orchestra playing iconic Universal film scores and showcased everything from “Wicked: For Good” to “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” was a notable departure from Warner Bros.’ focus on risky original titles and Lionsgate’s attempts to strike a balance on expanding their franchises and offering some low budget originality. Universal’s message was about stability, offering titles that audiences know and which will likely provide reliable box office while the industry as a whole tries to figure out how to effectively bring variety back to the big screen in...

Del Toro is Zsa-zsa Korda, one of the richest men in Europe; Threapleton is Sister Liesl, his daughter, a nun; Cera is Bjorn Lund, the tutor.

Wes Anderson brought the impossibly twee “The Phoenician Scheme” to Las Vegas while Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone showcased the creepy, bee-filled “Bugonia” at CinemaCon.
Anderson’s latest film, an espionage thriller, debuted a first-look trailer on Wednesday as part of Universal’s presentation to theater owners. The studio’s indie arm, Focus Features, is distributing “The Phoenician Scheme,” marking the third collaboration with Anderson after 2012’s “Moonrise Kingdom” and 2023’s “Asteroid City.”
Benicio del Toro stars in the film as Zsa-zsa Korda, one of the richest men in Europe, while Mia Threapleton plays his daughter and Michael Cera portrays her tutor. In the trailer, which hasn’t been made available to the public, Zsa-zsa Korda survives a plane crash (his sixth!) and decides to take that as a sign — so he arranges to bestow his estate to his daughter. Wes Anderson is back this summer with The Phoenician Scheme. The first trailer from the indie filmmaker's new espionage thriller debuted at CinemaCon today, and Collider's Britta DeVore is on the scene. The film opens in limited release on May 30, 2025, before opening wide on June 7.
In the new trailer, a man (Benicio del Toro) lies in a cornfield following a plane crash. Barely surviving the accident, he decides that he must choose his successor. That successor will be his daughter, who is somewhat inconveniently a nun. Benedict Cumberbatch pops in with a ridiculous beard while an assassin comes for everything del Toro’s character has built during his lifetime. The trailer is shot in Anderson's now-trademark style, complete with his beloved Futura typeface. One of the most famous “Saturday Night Live” sketches among cinephiles is one that imagines if Wes Anderson directed a horror movie. But with the director’s new film “The Phoenician Scheme” we will get the answer to this question: What if Wes Anderson directed a spy film?
In the new trailer first shown at CinemaCon, we see a plane crash where Zsa-Zsa Korda, one of the richest men in Europe, has survived a plane crash and is assumed dead. But it turns out the assassination may be a part of a plan by the U.S. government to take him out, as he has set up one of the most lucrative underground crime rings in the world.
Cue several rapid fire quips that Anderson fans have come to expect from an ensemble cast that includes Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, and many, many more.

Cannes is back: The 78th French film festival returns May 13-24 with a wave of world premieres that will set the tone for the movie year ahead. Months earlier than the fall corridor that once positioned the narrative for awards season, Cannes is now the go-to first stop for new films that want to make an impact on the fall race.
Just look at last year’s bounty: “Anora” won the Palme d’Or from a jury led by Greta Gerwig, played Telluride and Toronto, and went all the way to five Oscar wins for Best Picture, Best Director/Writer/Editor Sean Baker, and Best Actress Mikey Madison. Plus, 2024 competition winners including “The Substance” and “Emilia Pérez” also picked up Oscars, with “The Apprentice,” “The Girl with the Needle,” and “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” also netting Academy Awards nominations. The year before, Palme d’Or winner “Anatomy of a Fall...

Kogonada’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey got a big and bold debut in Las Vegas on Monday.
Sony used its CinemaCon presentation to bring out the filmmaker, who introduced exclusive footage from the upcoming film starring Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell from studio label Columbia Pictures.
Kogonada said he was inspired to make the movie “because it’s the kind of film that I would want to watch in a packed theater.” He used a string of adjectives to describe it, including “original,” “surprising,” “romantic,” “and, I hope, moving.” He revealed a few more specifics by saying that he considers it a film about two people reckoning with their pasts to find love in the present. Kogonada also praised his Oscar nominated actors as “two extraordinary stars at the peak of their craft.” He added: “They light up the screen together.”

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at Jarvis Cocker's Aline, directed by Wes Anderson. Wes Anderson's latest works all wear their influences on their sleeves. While the films all might feel like Wes Anderson's normal twee, symmetrical, pastel-colored schtick, there are some parts of those films that feel so inspired by some of their forebears, that they infuse the regular Anderson-style with some new elements that breathe life into them. For instance, The Grand Budapest Hostel has a world weary bittersweet nostalgia that feels very much inspired by the Eastern-European films that it pays homage to, while Asteroid City splits the difference between Chuck Jones and Bertold Brecht, borrowing from...

Not many artists can assume the impact of their work before it’s released out onto the world, but from Wes Anderson’s early days, he knew how special everything that goes into his films would one day be to the masses. From Max Fischer’s sports jacket and beret in “Rushmore” to Auggie’s camera and pipe in “Asteroid City,” every detail in an Anderson film is intricately and thoughtfully designed, so much so that Cinémathèque Française in Paris has decided to honor the Texas-born auteur with his first career retrospective.
As per The New York Times, Anderson has been carefully storing and keeping track of his films’ paraphernalia ever since Columbia Pictures sold materials off his first feature “Bottle Rocket” without his consent. For two-and-a-half years, curators from Cinémathèque Française and the Design Museum in London pored over a treasure trove of items locked away in Anderson’s storage facility in Kent,...

What’s going to be this year’s “Anora”? As the Cannes Film Festival rapidly approaches, that’s the question for artistic director Thierry Fremaux and movie buffs around the world.
A month before Cannes Film Festival’s press conference, the official selection is still very much a work in progress, with little reliable information filtering through about which movies have already been invited. In fact, as of Friday — despite the volume of splashy prediction stories — it appears that only three films have so far been given a golden ticket to compete in Cannes. Variety can reveal that one of them is Jim Jarmusch’s anticipated “Father Mother Sister Brother“ starring Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver and Tom Waits.
The last edition of the festival, which Fremaux had warned would be slightly weaker due to the impact of the double Hollywood strikes, proved to be anything but. Headlined by Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning “Anora,...

At least one member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s original Avengers lineup won’t be coming back anytime soon — not if Scarlett Johansson has anything to say about it.
In an interview with InStyle published Tuesday, Johansson insisted that Marvel fans need to let go of Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a Black Widow, the MCU hero she played onscreen for 11 years. Natasha famously sacrificed her life in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” While Johansson subsequently reprised the role in 2021’s “Black Widow,” a prequel set years before “Endgame,” she has no plans of undoing her character’s tragic, heroic death.
“Natasha is dead. She is dead. She’s dead. Ok?” Johansson exasperatedly told InStyle, noting that Marvel fans remain convinced that she is going to return to the MCU at some point. “They just don’t want to believe it. They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’”

Based on the fact that her character Natasha Romanoff — also known as the Black Widow — very obviously died in 2019's epic "Avengers: Endgame," you would think that, at this point, Scarlett Johansson would stop getting asked about a potential return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You would be wrong, though, especially considering the fact that Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the cinematic universe despite the fact that Tony Stark also died in "Endgame." With Downey Jr. set to play Doctor Doom in "Avengers: Doomsday" and "Avengers: Secret Wars," which are slated to release in 2026 and 2027 as of this writing, it's actually not surprising that people are bugging Johansson to return as Natasha. But as the actor clarified in a profile for InStyle, Natasha Romanoff is very most sincerely dead.
Speaking to interview Jason Sheeler for the magazine in March 2025, Johansson was blunt about the idea of coming back to the MCU.

Marvel fans just can't seem to let the McU's deceased heroes go, as Scarlett Johansson is now pleading with fans to let Black Widow rest. Johansson first portrayed Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow, in Iron Man 2, and the character quickly became a staple of the MCU, joining the Avengers when they first assembled in, well... The Avengers. Romanoff boldly sacrificed herself in Avengers: Endgame for the Soul Stone and only came back once more for the prequel film, Black Widow. But fans still assume that Johansson will return for Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, a rumor which she desperately wants to put to rest.
"Natasha is dead," Johansson said to InStyle Magazine when asked about potentially returning to the MCU. Of course, it may seem hard to trust any former Marvel actor who says they're not coming back to the superhero franchise, especially after Andrew Garfield blatantly...

In 1996, he played Scott Alexander in "The One with the Chicken Pox," and in 1997, he played Phil in "The One with the Ultimate Fighting Champion." Although it was a brief stint in the cultural phenomenon that is Friends, Park does not have good things to say about his experience on the show.
