Rob Riggle plays Colonel Max Bowers, former battalion commander of the 5th Special Forces Group, in the movie. Riggle, a Marine, actually served directly under the real Bowers during the same time period the movie is based on.
General Abdul Rashid Dostum was quoted, 'I asked for a few Americans, they brought with them the courage of a whole Army' according to eyewitness Robert Young Pelton's in his March 2002 National Geographic Adventure article "The Legend of Heavy D and the Boys". Pelton was the only journalist with the Green Beret and CIA team whose story is featured in "Horse Soldiers"
Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky don't just play a couple in this movie, they are married with kids in real life.
The movie is based on Doug Stanton's non-fiction book Horse Soldiers.
"Dostum", the last name of the Uzbek general, means "my best friend" in Uzbek and many other Turkic and Indo-European languages.
Michael Peña and Micheal Shannon both appeared in the movie World Trade Center based on the events of 9/11, with Shannon playing a former Marine who turns up at the site to help with the rescue efforts.

Although much of the filming took place near White Sands Missile Range, the scenes involving military encampments were not part of an actual Army installation. The structures were leased from AKS Military for filming, a private manufacturer who also provided the military structures for Transformers (2007).

This is the second time William Fitchner has played a current or former member of Delta Force. He played a composite character in Blackhawk Down and played COL John Mulholland in 12 Strong. Then MAJ Mulholland was a staff officer in Delta Force at the time the of actual battle in Mogadishu that inspired Mark Bowden's book and the movie, Blackhawk Down.
Cast members Chris Hemsworth and Michael Peña have both been in Marvel cinematic universe films. Hemsworth starred in the "Thor" and "Avengers" movies while Peña appeared in "Ant-Man" (2015).
-The film is based on Doug Stanton's non-fiction book Horse Soldiers, which tells the story of CIA paramilitary officers and U.S. Special Forces, in addition to USAF Combat Controllers, sent to Afghanistan immediately after the September 11 attacks.

Spoilers 

The trivia item below may give away important plot points.

Toward the end General Dostum finally catches up with his family's killer, Mullah Razzan. As he prepares to shoot and kill him, he says "Boramazor". In Uzbek, this means "Will not go". Whether he means that Razzan "will not get away again" or "will not go to Heaven" is left to the audience to ponder.
