Kyle Broflovski: Jimmy, exactly what part of the fishsticks joke did Cartman write?
Jimmy Valmer: Well, he didn't actually write... any of it.
Kyle Broflovski: Let me guess: you came up with the joke, and Cartman sat on the couch eating Twizzlers?
Jimmy Valmer: Actually, it was potato chips.

flawed episode but great commentary
11 August 2019 | by egunderson24See all my reviews

The problem with this episode is that it's just one joke over and over. The joke itself is really funny the first few times but it would have worked better as a subplot instead of the entirety of a 22 minute episode. It's a similar issue that many people have with "Terrance and Phillip In Not Without My Anus" where it's basically the only joke in the whole episode being repeated over and over. In third grade I was taught that jokes usually aren't funny anymore after the third or fourth time. This joke is probably repeated 50-100 times throughout the episode. It's still funny but it is used too much. The episode feels like it drags on because of it.

BUT... this episode is not bad. Easily the best part is the commentary on Kanye West and is possibly one of the best commentaries that they have done and one that I find the most relatable with. From all the things that Kanye has done like telling people in wheelchairs to stand up and complaining on a stage in front of everybody about not winning an award, I can easily side with them here that his ego is ridiculous. Also keep in mind that both these things happened AFTER the episode aired so there's probably even more things that happened before that I don't know about. There are also other little things in the episode that I like, including how Cartman's memory of the joke being created slowly gets farther and farther away from what actually happens which seems realistic also already mentioned how the joke is really funny (at least the first few times.) The running joke of Kanye not understanding the wordplay is also funny and fits right in with how big his ego is. There are also other jokes besides the one that Jimmy (and Cartman to an extent) came up with. I also love how they somewhat subtly compare Cartman to Kanye and how it feels pretty natural in context. I would easily pick this episode over something like Mr Garrison's Fancy New Vagina any day. It has a very strong commentary that has only gotten more accurate with time and I think that would probably be the best reason to come back to this episode.

Keep in mind that a 6/10 doesn't mean I don't like the episode. It just has a mix of stuff I really like and other stuff that I really have problems with. I doubt many people will agree with me on this but I hope you can see where I'm coming from.
