Downsizing premiered at the 74th Venice International Film Festival on August 30, 2017. It was chosen by the National Board of Review as one of the top ten films of 2017, while Chau has earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the 75th Golden Globe Awards.
Gala screening on the 14th Edition of Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF). It was screened on 12th December 2017, with a video message from the Director. He stated that all his films from The Descendants, were present at the DIFF.
In the movie, the mother of Matt Damon's character, Paul, mentions "they can fly to Mars but they can't cure my fibromyalgia". In 2015, Matt Damon starred in "The Martian" a film about one of the first space expeditions to the planet Mars.
The trivia items below may give away important plot points.
The trailer for the film creates the false impression that Paul is distraught with his call center job at Land's End, and that this is one of the reasons for his decision to downsize. But in the final film, he actually doesn't take this job until after downsizing, following the divorce. Likewise, a scene of Audrey selling shoes from the trailer that leads to her being similarly distraught does not appear in the final film at all.
