Looks back at the extraordinary 12-year period in which Pelé, the only man to win three World Cup titles, went from young superstar in 1958 to national hero in 1970; a radical yet turbulent era in Brazil’s history.
Unfortunately for film-makers Ben Nicholas and David Tryhorn, there are few layers to their subject, Pelé, who despite being the greatest footballer of all time might also be one of the blandest. Unlike Asif Kapadia's vision of Maradona the fallen angel, whose career on the pitch interplayed with tumultuous politics, war, and corruption, Pele does little to provoke his audience (with the exception of a few affairs, and his indifference towards military dictatorships). Pelé is straightforward documentary filmmaking.
