Born in Delhi, but now living in Mumbai, Karthik Narayan is a much abused employee with ACL Construction, secretly in love with leggy Architect, Shonali Mukherjee, who has been going steady with yet another co-worker, Ashish. After purchasing a new telephone, Karthik gets a call from a male voice that resembles his, who instructs him to follow directions; tell no one about this phone call, and he will achieve success. He follows these instructions, is soon promoted, as well as befriends Shonali, and continues following instructions from this caller. After Shonali makes it clear that she loves him, he breaks his promise, and is urged to seek counseling by her. He reluctantly does so with a Pyschiatrist, Dr. Shweta Kapadia, who hopes to cure him by visiting him early morning in his flat - not realizing the shock and trauma that await the duo. Written by
In an effort to create a more realistic performance for the movie by enriching his acting with the thoughts and emotions of his character, Farhan Akhtar had suddenly withdrawn into a shell, consciously trying to distance himself from the people around, during the course of the film's shooting. Since the part required him to be a lonely brooder Farhan (who is known to be utterly gregarious and accessible) switched off his phone and became almost inaccessible to the world outside. Friends found Farhan's behavior strange since usually he is so reachable and cheerful. For his role, Farhan said "It was the nature of the character I was playing. He's a guy lost in his world. So I was making an effort to isolate myself. Lately I've just been switching off from the world for the sake of my character. If you want to call it method acting, so be it." See more »
When Karthik buys the telephone for the first time, the vendor tells him it's a new Japanese model. The box has Korean written on it (above "Kyungmin Corded Phone") and then the English translation underneath. This is seen more clearly when he buys the same phone towards the end of the movie. KCK is a well made movie that does not insult the intelligence of the viewer. The script, editing and story telling is crisp. Acting is believable. Overall I came back very entertained. Not the typical film from Bollywood that gets put out in the name of "masala". A special word of praise for first time director Vijay Lalwani for trying something bold and off-beat in his very first movie. Also Farhan deserves special mention; he dons the cap of lead actor and does a very commendable job. He is truly the "master of all trades" -- a good director, producer, writer, singer and now an actor. Shefali and Ram Kapoor have also turned in good performances.
