In the wee hours of the morning, a police constable discovers the body of a woman lying in a yard. The victim is Cathy Lane and the medical examiner determines she was strangled and that her throat was slit. The attack probably lasted no more than a few minutes but the killer tried to gut her as well. The police, led by newly appointed DI Joe Chandler, at first focus on her husband Rob Lees, a brute of a man who also happens to be a butcher, but he has the perfect alibi: he was in the drunk tank at Charing Cross station at the time of the murder. Ripperologist Edward Buchan suggests to them that this murder is identical to Jack the Ripper's first murder, and that another attack on Emma Jones also matches one from over 100 years ago. DI Chandler soon recognizes a pattern to the killings, much as Buchan suggested. His major problem however is that his squad, led by DS 'Skip' Miles, have absolutely no respect for him and see him as just another fast-track university graduate who knows ... Written by garykmcd

DI Joseph Chandler is also the name of an inspector who went to the scene of Annie Chapman's death, and became a witness at her inquest. See more »

Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) do not routinely work night shifts and would not be walking alone through London's East End at 2am. If the PCSO in question had been on a late shift it's unlikely a fire (even with an element of public disorder) would take that long to deal with. See more »

DS Miles: You're a Ripperologist, aren't ya?
Edward Buchan: Why, yes, I am, and I also host an excellent Ripper tour. A lot of the operators use their tours to promote very inaccurate theories, but I pride myself on my strict adherence to the known facts.
DS Miles: Well, there's a fact... you're a loser. Now get out before I nick you for wasting police time.

Formulaic Beginning

A new DC, Chandler, has just been certified. He has been assigned a police precinct which has become ineffective and slovenly. The men resent him immediately because he has some behaviors, including a sort of OCD. He is stiff and has no sense of humor. He is frustrated that they don't don't take him seriously. Because there seems to be little motivation, as he begins to investigate a ghastly crime, he rails at this men (they deserve a lot more but he is a neophyte. He meets a man who does Jack the Ripper tours on the London streets and this man gives him a book about the crimes of his subject. It turns out the victim was murdered in exactly the same way as the notorious killer over a hundred years previously. His lead cop thinks the guy is a crackpot, even when a second murder has a similar connection. He goes to the tour guide and to his book and sets up a stakeout. The results are quite interesting.
