In the forest near Cain's End, a church bell tolls. An Indian runs up to the church, and Sheriff Stone wielding a knife comes out. The Indian runs into town and tries to get the local preacher to help. The sheriff shoots at him, and the Indian backs away, his hands up.
The sheriff's daughter runs out and says that she loves the Indian. The sheriff tells her that she's not marrying the savage, and the girl says that if he kills her then she'll have to kill him.
A podcaster's assistant standing on a porch, Jeremy, giggles. The sheriff glares at him, and then lowers the revolver and shakes the Indian's hand as everyone applauds.
Later, the reenactor playing the daughter tells Jeremy and his boss Xxx that the love between her character and the Indian healed the conflict between the local tribe and the people of Cain's End. She says that there are two fight, and the second is the marriage. The reenactor tells Xxx that they're fans of the Nostalgia Podcast, and they expose people to positive American history.
Later in their hotel room, Jeremy tells Rosalie that the scene was all crap. He explains that it's a white story that they made up what Indians do and say. Jeremy doubts that there was a relationship, because an Indian wouldn't have fought the sheriff. Rosalie suggests that Jeremy guest-hosted the episode with her, and says the same thing because it's about his tribe. He objects when Rosalie suggests that his tribe, the Cree and the local Blackfoot tribe are the same. She kisses him and says that it's the perfect opportunity for him to be on the air.
The reenactor comes in and asks if they're ready. She takes them to the church and shows them the cemetery where Stone and the preacher who helped the Indian are buried. The bride is buried nearby, and the groom went back to his people and was buried in the traditional tribal way.
The reenactor, Chad, playing the Indian runs up. He knows that Jeremy is Cree, and has some questions about his role. Chad notices that Jeremy has a tattoo on his wrist as they shake hands, and Jeremy says that it's his spiritual name and personal. Chad says that his character didn't speak much, and he tries to respect the Indian territories. The actress Claire, says that all of the costumes are authentic.
Chad tries to put his headdress on Jeremy, and Jeremy refuses. The actor asks Jeremy to teach him some Cree fighting techniques for his fight scene, and knocks Jeremy back by throwing some punches at him. Jeremy cuts his hand on a metal tombstone, and everyone in town freezes.
In the cemetery, Chad apologizes and they take him to the jailhouse.
"Stone" unfreezes, and looks around as the word "traitor" echoes in his head.
The two couples head through town and notice that everyone has disappeared. Chad figures that they're getting ready for the next scene. A woman, Evie runs out, stares in horror at Chad, and runs to the end of town. She hit an invisible barrier, is knocked down, gets up, and runs off. Chad dismisses her behavior as committing to her character.
At the jailhouse, Rosalie tends to Jeremy's injury while Claire worries that she can't do the dress rehearsal because she was injured during the scuffle. Rosalie volunteers herself and Jeremy to take their parts for their rehearsal, figuring that if there's no wedding then there's no story. Jeremy reluctantly agrees.
Chad gets his Indian costume, and Jeremy sees it and refuses. Jeremy hears voice saying that he's a savage and freezes up when Rosalie holds the costume up to him. Chad and Rosalie wonder if he's having seizure. He shoves them away, saying that he couldn't move, and that he and Claire need to go to a hospital.
Rosalie agrees, and Jeremy asks where their phones are since they handed them in for authenticity when they arrives. Rosalie insists that Jeremy stay there with Claire, and she leaves with Chad. Once they're alone, Jeremy asks Claire what the real story is about what happened. Claire says that there was a massacre. Stone was strict and his daughter was supposed to marry a local man she didn't know.
Stone caught his daughter sneaking back in before her wedding, and she claimed that an Indian attacked her. The local preacher objected, but Stone rounded up a posse and killed every Indian and every townsperson who disagrees.
Chad and Rosalie arrive at the church but find no one there.
Claire tells Jeremy that tone and the posse massacred everyone.
Chad finds the phones... and discovers that someone broke them. They hear someone moving in the next room, and go to investigate. The reenactor playing the preacher has been strung up, and Rosalie and Chad run to the door. Stone is waiting for them, mutters "my town" and the run out the back.
Rosalie and Chad come to a woman killing an Indian. They run to the jailhouse and tells Jeremy and Claire that they're leaving. As they go out, they find the street filled with dead Indian bodies. They run past the church, and Stone shoots at them, discovers that his gun is unarmed, and grabs a nearby axe.
The four people hide in a stable, and Claire says that the reenactors are reenacting the real story. Jeremy asks for a weapon, and all Chad has is a real tomahawk. When Jeremy takes it, he stares at the others and freezes up. A voice in his head tells him to kill, and he swings the tomahawk at Rosalie and he just misses. She runs out with Chad and Claire, Jeremy chasing them.
Claire trips and Jeremy comes at them, snarling. Stone steps out and Jeremy charges him. The two men slowly advance on each other, Stone wielding the axe. They fight and Jeremy finally takes Stone down with a blow to the head. He prepares to finish off Stone, and as he raises his hand sees the tattoo on his wrist. Jeremy yells at the voice to get out of his head, yells his spiritual name of Walks Upon Earth, and breaks free of the spell on him.
Rosalie tells Chad and Claire to go on, as Jeremy runs to her and says that there's something in the original costumes. Meanwhile, the two actresses hit the barrier around the town. The couple embrace and run to the actors, and Jeremy says that the clothe belong there. Once the actors remove the costumes, their able to pass through the barrier.
Jeremy goes through the barrier, but Rosalie is stopped. She refuses to drop her bag, insisting that it has all of her notes. Jeremy sends Chad and Claire on, and Stone wakes up and starts to get up. Jeremy hides behind a wagon with Rosalie, goes through the bag, and finds the daughter's wedding veil and Stone's journal from 1883. Rosalie's handwriting is in the margins, and it reveals that she knows the real history of Cain's End. She also noted that she would reveal it to Jeremy for the episode climax.
Rosalie insists that it would make a great story, and insists that she was just trying to help Jeremy get over his letting the past stop himself and realize his full potential as more than just Indian. Shocked at her words, Rosalie tries to take them back. Jeremy says that nobody control his story or his voice but him,.
Stone yells out to Jeremy, and Jeremy throws the journal on the ground, He puts on the veil on Rosalie, shoves her out in the street, and yells to Stone that his daughter is there. The daughter speaks through Rosalie, while Jeremy walks through the barrier and turns to look at the townspeople. They can't follow him through the barrier, and scream their anger at him. He turns and walks away.
