Is this the novel Claire Bloom mentions in her autobiography?

I was curious, because years ago Bloom mentioned when she read the novel she coudnt believe how selfish his husband was. She had to read about his infedelities. She didnt paint Roth very nicely. And the main character of the novel resembles him very closely. A great writer, but a self centered man? I dont know. I have yet to look for more information. I loved, though, the work of Seydoux, Podalydes and Devos. So natural.- The scenes between Podalydes and Seydoux show they are very talented.

A Very Nice Little Story Telling Film

Deception delivers some of the most interesting and engaging dialogue in movie i've ever seen, a miss of a one particular section of a story and nit picky here and there but the rest are good, the movie also fills with great powerful performance by all the cast, there is a lot of great specific conversation scene in the film and overall Deception is a very nice little story telling film.

    Very Talky

Were it not for Seydoux, I think I'd have given up on this.

The main character (enigmatically called "Philip" and a Jewish author...) is not very engaging and the whole thing (perhaps like the novel, which I've not read) comes across as very self-indulgent. The script is a bit like a monologue at times, where we get to hear his thoughts on life as mansplained to the various (imaginary?) other characters, usually female. Some of this is interesting, much not. The worst bit is where he puts himself on imaginary trial for misogyny and other crimes, presumably as a diversionary attempt to get his self-criticism in first.

Perhaps with a different actor playing Philip I'd have enjoyed it more, but I suspect not. Never mind.

    Those talking about the dialogue

Comon. It's obvious why this movie is liked. As Billy Joel sang, honesty is such a lonely word. Lea Seydoux gets a lot of mention for obvious reasons. Also, the movie lands on the positive side of critiques, when you come on this side. That's deliberate. This movie gets zero Stars. I just put up the stars that you see to get it in the crowd. This movie is not about dialogue. It's about what you think it would be about when the authors of the movie and the critics say that it's about dialogue.

    • Trivia
The movie is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Philip Roth. Director Arnaud Desplechin had read the book and gave copies of it to the crew of My Sex Life... or How I Got Into an Argument (1996). For the DVD bonuses of Kings & Queen (2004), he shot and played in the final scene opposite Emmanuelle Devos. Roth saw the bonus and called him to tell him to adapt the book into a movie. He tried over the years but failed, and even thought of doing it as a play with actor Denis Podalydès. Eventually, he tried again during the spring 2020 lockdown in France, and something clicked.
