Storyline

Keith Reynolds arrives in his car and, apart from momentarily forgetting his hat, today looks like it will be a good day as he is next in line for promotion, a promotion that will surely win over the secretary he has been admiring from afar for many years. Stick figures and droll narration combine well
13 April 2014 | by bob the mooSee all my reviews

This animation features stick figures and side-on animation which amounts to a cut-away office block. In this view we see Keith Reynolds arrive in his car and, apart from momentarily forgetting his hat, today looks like it will be a good day as he is next in line for promotion, a promotion that will surely win over the secretary he has been admiring from afar for many years. Unfortunately events conspire against Keith Reynolds and this is not going to be a great day, not at all.

This is an odd little film which has a very detached sense of humor that works surprisingly well which still telling the story straight. The animation is very basic on the surface but it is effective and well structured – the use of stick men is not a lack of ambition but I think a deliberate choice to allow the characters to be as detached as the narration. The narration is really where the film's tone is set and it is Reynolds' voice that makes it work. He is droll and matter-of-fact with a nice dry but engaging voice. The dialogue matches this very well and is funny in how separated from the on screen action it is. This sense of detachment keeps us close to Keith Reynolds and keeps the film amusing and reflective rather than panicked or thrilling, which is how it plays out.

It is never hilarious nor really insightful but it is very nicely delivered, amusing, cleverly structured and ends on a nice little note even if it doesn't totally close out the story as a whole.
