The Blue Devils is a wonderful film and a canny display of how to withhold information till the end to give maximum impact. In a kind of "just the facts" way, we get to know these men who set out day after day to win a battle no one was sure could be won. The future was too scary to even consider. And in using that simple story telling device, we see once again why less is more. These men are all simple and straightforward guys who say it like it is. They don't get all misty eyed and mournful, but you never question the fact that they cared deeply about each other and looked out for one another. I was moved to tears by the end as a result of their heroic struggles and stoic demeanor and their love for their wingmen. The footage is amazing and mind-bogglingly blunt. As are their words. You get a true sense of what life was like on the carriers and in the air. It was one hell of a ride.
