Storyline

An acclaimed documentary feature exploring the extraordinary journey of the Reuther brothers - Walter, Roy, and Victor - prolific labor statesman whose social justice movement, under the banner of the United Auto Workers union, transformed the landscape of a nation. Directed by Victor's grandson, Sasha, and narrated by Martin Sheen, the film is an in-depth study of one family's rise from auto plant organizers in 1930s Detroit to leaders in collective bargaining, Civil Rights activism, and international labor solidarity. Behind the dramatic headlines of picket line conflict, assassination attempts, heated Senate hearings, and inter-union power struggles, lies a stirring personal story of determination, sacrifice, triumph, and tragedy. This influential and often controversial 40-year crusade would contribute to lifting millions of workers to a middle-class living and compel American democracy to live up to its promise of equality. Great Documentary on UAW history
5 May 2012 | by See all my reviews

Great film for those interested in labor and civil rights history in the U.S. in the 20th century. As a retired UAW member I had the privilege over the year of meeting a few of the people in the film, Victor Reuther, Doug Frasier, and Jerry Tucker. I certainly hope it gets to be on PBS as it is important historically to our country. Thank you Sasha Reuther for making this valuable contribution to documenting some of our history. I saw the film on May 5, 2012 in Chicago at the Labor Notes Conferece. I hope to some day be able to purchase it for my local union library in Three Rivers, Michigan. It is unfortunate that the UAW itself turned it's back on Victor Reuther in the 1980's when he challenged some of the actions of those that inherited the movement he and his brothers had built.
