Storyline

To his friends and to his girlfriend Zoe, Nick is stuck in perpetual adolescence: he's approaching 30, lives off a trust fund, has no job and no responsibilities. When Zoe abruptly leaves him and New York for a job in Los Angeles, Nick comes up with a strategy to get her back: taking a job as a soccer coach of a junior-high team. At first it's a diversion - just a strategy. Then, primarily through Hector, the team's best player, Nick engages. In the process, he meets an ER doc who interests him, goes behind Hector's father's back to keep the lad on the team, and realizes he's conflicted when he gets the chance to reconnect with Zoe. My 328th Review: Gentle romantic comedy around soccer
22 June 2010 | by See all my reviews

Coach is a very safe romantic comedy - but it does kind of work, we actually enjoyed it, but not sure we like ourselves for liking it. It's just grown-up enough to be OK.

It's plot of a slacker trust fund guy who finds himself and love coaching little league soccer is kind of like comfort food - you know what you're getting and either you like it anyway or at least there's nothing not to like here.

It would be a good choice if you a) have a boyfriend who was soccer mad, and you want to watch a film together or b) had a girlfriend that you wish would at least watch the world cup matches with you and you want to introduce her to soccer.

Overall Coach is like spaghetti and meatballs - you can't complain, but you can't rave either. It's a cute romantic comedy (bordering on drama) and all in all it just about scores the goal it's aiming for....
