It is a romantic mystery about digging through the secrets of mysterious events that occurred in a village 26 years ago, that are somehow linked to the mysterious events happening in the present.
This is a smart, ambitious and dark sci-fi thriller about a rich and influential Korean clique going for personal immortality as ultimate goal in order to preserve their acquired advantage in life. But reality is stranger than fiction as they say. A couple of years ago I was reading about Google investing enormous amounts of money in the search for immortality. The über rich Tech movers and shakers are falling for the age old trick as well in clinging to their precious EGO. So this series is dans l'air du temps as they say. Also, Koreans are becoming master storytellers on film. I especially enjoyed the twist and turns by means of multiperspectivity. There are some comic relief moments which were a bit too slapstick for my taste.
The lead Min Namkoong is terrific in his portrayal of a tormented survivor of an unimaginable experiment during his childhood which now leads a special task force looking for the author of a string of murders seemingly impossible to commit but also demons from his past. Seol-Hyun Kim is also excellent in her role as ambitious newbie detective with fighting skills and a personal secret or two. Great baddies. Fantastic child actors also.
This is highly recommended to all sci-fi lovers but especially X Files or Fringe fans. An 8* rating plus an addition to my favorite sci-fi series list.
P.S. - the story seems wrapped up after 16 episodes, but could also go on. Leave it to the Koreans to relaunch a story. I kinda hope they do.
