A "light" and funny movie about serious matters
lisamonde20 July 2022
A wonderful story of a girl who embraces her uniqueness, who is not afraid to "go for it", to take a chance, to go on an adventure, to figure her way out of various situations that life throws at her. Life is messy but if you have good friends by your side, if you believe in yourself and let your light shine - it can be pretty great! I loved one of the messages of the movie: be yourself and always put yourself first. Those who are worthy will come into your life and stay no matter what. Adventures never stop!

The talented cast worked so well together under the beautiful direction of Nicola Rose. The cinematography was very professional and everyone who worked on this movie created a piece that stands out and is unlike any other movie out there. I loved the mixture of cultures, accents, languages and characters. It was exciting to see the artistically created personal worlds of the main characters unfold in front of our eyes! Wishing this film huge success!

Adorable and very funny

I loved every second of this movie. It's easy to watch, funny, real for the most part :-). A little exaggerated to point out important moments. I would say very well done. Would recommend to anyone for a great light evening watch, romantic or family.

Sweet, silly and profound!

Such a sweet movie, both silly and profound. You are rooting for the main characters and yet not necessarily in the same way you do with a traditional romantic comedy. Loved it and would highly recommend!

Surprising, heartfelt, and funny!

My favorite element is that "Goodbye, Petrushka" kept surprising me throughout - not in a jarring way, but in a "wow, I didn't expect that, but want to see where this goes" kind of way. Kehoe is a great heroine, really funny and sincere, and the writer/director gives the film a unique visual style and a nice edge to the comedic dialogue. A great watch!

A Wonderful Indie Film
FilmHero4618 July 2022
This is a wonderful and funny indie film about taking chances in life to become who you are meant to be. The film's cast were both great and quite amusing in their own quirky which really brought the film alive.

The rare coming-of-age film that transcends cultures
mbelenky-7200418 July 2022
"Goodbye, Petrushka" was a real treat to see, especially in front of a sold out audience at Chelsea Cinepolis. Lots of fun, quirky, and offbeat humor that nicely complements the main character's story arc. The whole cast is tremendous and entertaining and rarely do you see classical music used so often and so effectively throughout a feature film. This is clearly done by a director who gets how people speak, act, while never losing sight of the past (i.e., puppets, figure skating, etc.). Not to mention it's an accurate, poignant depiction of characters discovering themselves and their desires in their 20s/30s.

Fantastic indie film
lisakmoore-8886617 July 2022
Some terrific performances in this indie, with plenty of laugh out loud moments. It's a story about growing up, being young and not quite knowing who you are yet. It will resonate with anyone who was ever at that in-between stage.

What a little gem!
craigahrens9 August 2022
My wife and I were in the mood for something fun and this little gem did the trick. This film hit all the key boxes for us... The story was good, the acting was good and the film moved along at a really nice pace. There we were no areas that were dragging to us. Well done folks!

Real, Raw, and Hilarious!
shelbyhalldenney27 July 2022
This movie made me laugh until I cried, but I also actually cried. It's the perfect rom-com, while somehow being an antithesis to the classic rom-com tropes. It's refreshing and relatable! The direction and the acting were both top-notch, and one of my favorite elements was the use of music! This is going to be one of those movies for cuddling up with my spouse and takeout on a weeknight!

Meaningful comedy
kamekil17 July 2022
Loved Goodbye, Petrushka! It's a comedy but there are also some scenes that bring tears to your eyes. It's a comedy but underneath the jokes are some deep emotions and you really don't want the story to end. The cast was so good!

Lovely, sweet and fun!

I really enjoyed this little gem. Quirky characters, plenty of surprises and laughs -- and some heartfelt moments underneath it all. The actors knocked it out of the park and the storytelling kept me guessing. I was bummed it had to end. If you're in the mood for a feel-good coming of age film, take a chance on this.

Fantastic collection of characters
kottan_us25 August 2022
I applaud Nicola Rose for creating a world where quirky, recognizable and relatable characters live and love. A sweet relief from Hollywoods "gloss-by-numbers".

Lizzie Kehoe is a terrific lead, I can watch her eat an apple and not get bored. If you crave a film where people are portrayed as flawed, vulnerable, jealous, inspired and loving,- this is the movie for you.

Delightful from beginning to end!
directortim201210 August 2022
This was an excellent romantic-comedy, and not in the contrived Netflix sort of way. This film had real heart. You absolutely find yourself pulled in by the lead and her Paris adventures. The romance between the leads is charming but also believable. A sweet film, but not gooey sweet. More like, "Ah! That was great!" A very well made and shot film with a delightful cast. It won my heart. Highly recommend!

Irresistible film about the pursuit of love and art... with a twist!
carolynjacobs-8312111 August 2022
Writer / Director Nicola Rose puts her studies at Columbia University and the Sorbonne University in Paris to good use in her debut film about an aspiring New York artist who dreams of putting on a show in Paris... with puppets. In some ways a traditional coming of age story, there are refreshing surprises at every turn and some laugh-out-loud funny scenes. Lizzie Kehoe leads an appealing cast through this unique and irresistible story. So sit down with a café au lait and pain au chocolat, and enjoy this delightful film! I look forward to future work from this talented director.

So Sweet and Humane
christinahmok19 July 2022
This movie shows things we don't usually get to see in movies -- vulnerability, ambivalence and yearning. We feel what the protagonist feels and return to those moments in our lives when we experienced life with great openness and vibrancy. This work reminds me of Tom McCarthy movies like The Station Agent and The Visitor -- not a huge storyline, but you get swept up into the humanity of the characters, and also, inner growth is on display.

An unexpected ballet
hopeprism1 August 2022
Feels like you are watching a ballet, with each scene being as captivating and charming as the next. The audience is taken on an adventure with Claire, our main protagonist of the film, who could be described as sweet, innocent, and a bit naive by some. Goodbye, Petrushka touches upon multiple facets of human emotion and through its characters, shows how life provides us with many lessons. A light-hearted film and a highly recommended watch.

Charming and Imaginative
catheraneskillen15 August 2022
This is a beautifully done film. One of the interesting things is the two lead characters are finely drawn with many layers of subtlety, while those around them are caricatures but each so grounded in truth that they reminded me of people I know! Just very well done and out of the ordinary. Don't miss this film. This is a filmmaker to track.

A Whimsical Franco-Romance
briandilorenzofilm11 August 2022
Lizzie Kehoe gives a winning performance as Claire, a French-obsessed film student, in Nicola Rose's "Goodbye, Petrushka." I really enjoyed the small details: Professor Steve spelling "honisty" wrong, the way the French Au pair coordinator asks for payment, or Claire's sheer joy walking down a French street. I really liked the interweaving of the Petrushka fable into the main storyline and Clarie's goal of staging a puppet show with her crush Thibaut (Thomas Vieljeux). The intercut animations were also very cool. I loved watching Claire's journey and Lizzie Kehoe was excellent in the role. When we finally get to see some of her puppetry skills to her roommate, Kehoe fully commits and it's a joy to watch. I also really enjoyed her connection with her roommate Julia (Casey Landman), especially towards the end where they join together to throw *something* off of their roof. The ending was bittersweet but also rang very true to life. Would definitely recommend.

Goodbye Petrushka is a refreshingly delightful and heartfelt film
kael-7103911 August 2022
I've enjoyed watching writer-director, Nicola Rose's previous work of short films and webisodes and her feature film directorial debut is her best work yet.

Rose helms a very satisfying and sincere tale of the exhilarating highs and heartbreaking lows one often experiences on their search for love, purpose and fulfillment. A talented cast is one of the film's highlights -- the main lead, Lizzie Kehoe, shines the brightest as Claire.

If you're looking to be both entertained and moved, this movie is absolutely well worth your time.

Actually a great film.
TC_0017 August 2022
Overall, just a great film from beginning to end.

I appreciate movies that use their scenes and characters extremely efficient and 'Goodbye, Petrushka' did that very well.

In the movie, every scene and character matters and they get to the point without feeling like it's rushing or fluffing around just to make the movie longer.

I didn't expect to laugh as much as I did, or at all. The main character was going through almost of a tragic point in her life where nothing was going right for her but it was done in such a lighthearted way that the audience can really enjoy the movie.

Love the actors, music and animation.

A lot of romantic comedy movies out there are more "romantic silly" and not so much comic funny. 'Goodbye, Petrushka' put the "comedy" in romantic comedy.

Amazing film and story we don't get to see often!
NoreenQuadir30 June 2022
It was refreshing to watch a film about messing up even in adulthood and how as adults, we can always learn and grow. The characters immediately hook you in and you get a strong sense of who they are right away while still getting moments of surprise that make them all the more interesting. The relationships between the characters were so well developed and it was interesting to see how each character affects the other and how their relationships evolve. The entire movie balanced both drama and humor that you can feel moved and amused at the same time. It is definitely a must see!

Funny movie grounded with real emotions
aik-4024410 August 2022
Funny movie grounded with real emotions. Beautiful score and animation as well. Really liked how this movie ended up showing what connecting with others through their art can look like, a topic I haven't seen explored much. Enjoyed the unexpected resolution too.
