This is not a third movie, but rather a special in-character cast reunion to benefit the World Central Kitchen charity. It took place on September 25, 2020 on Netflix, Facebook, and YouTube at 11pm BST.
According to Kimberly Williams-Paisley, the remote filming experience "took an amazing amount of time to shoot this film given it was on Zoom. We had, like, tech scouts. I was driving Nancy around trying to show her different areas, different backgrounds. I was just carrying my computer everywhere and trying to find the right spot. Then I had a wardrobe fitting where I had to take her through my closet. She (Nancy Meyers) wound up sending me some stuff because I didn't have the right Annie Banks attire."
Writer and director of the original films, Nancy Meyers, was the driving force behind this reunion. She wrote the screenplay and got the original cast on board, and sent everyone lighting equipment, microphones, and iPhones.
A third installment in the Father of the Bride series has been in development, in one form or another, since 1996.
According to writer and director Nancy Meyers, she "gave all of my worries and concerns about the pandemic to Steve's character. By channeling myself into his naturally over-the-top personality I could finally laugh at some of what I was putting myself through. I mean, I was using up 50 pairs of disposable gloves a month, and I never left my house. I was forwarding so many emails about the virus to my kids that they finally stopped answering me. I decided this was how I was going to write George Banks. There would be a bigger piece of me in him this time."
