- Lillie continues her liaison with handsome young jockey Squire Abington who lavishes her with expensive gifts. Her close friend Patsy Cornwallis-West tries to warn her off the man who has a reputation for treating his women very badly. When they quarrel over his boisterous and low-class friends, he beats her. She refuses to break with him however at least in part because of his gifts. He wants to marry her but Edward continues to refuse her a divorce. After one particularly vicious beating, Squire is arrested but she drops the charges after Bertie expresses his concern over the publicity. After Squire goes to America, she receives some shocking news. She sees her friend Oscar Wilde, not having spoken to him since she refused to act in his play two years ago.
