Storyline

Only connect. In a Hoosier town, boys' basketball is king. Bill is a former athlete and high-school coach who drinks too much, rarely sees his daughter from an old marriage, and busses tables at a local cafe. A friend who's now a principal offers him a job coaching girls; Bill takes it without much spirit. Six come to practice; one has a broken foot. They're awful in their first game, and Bill has to figure out, with help from Donna, the school's burly bus driver, if he actually can coach girls. They respond, and Bill suddenly has a family of sorts, just as his own relationship with his daughter worsens. With a winning season in reach, will Bill blow this chance? Trivia

During the "females aren't athletes" discussion Billie Jean King is wrongly labeled as a golfer. Billie Jean King was actually a tennis player.
  • This was an intentional joke - simply because the girls aren't familiar with Billie Jean King. One of the deleted scenes has the coach pointing out that she wasn't a golfer.

My 349th Review: Sneaky lowball comedy...surprisingly good.....
25 November 2010 | by inteleartsSee all my reviews

Kind of Garden State with Basketball, a sneaky lowball story of a loser coach's shot of redemption with a girls' basketball team, the Lady Chargers, that is both very funny and also kind of effective on the drama front.

Everyone creates a low-fi vibe and just runs with it, small town values - we loved the comedy is in the small touches - and the timing - much of the comedy comes from the everyday conversations but just rings true.

If you like sports movies with a little more than just training and victory dances then this fits the bill well - it's well done at every step...
