New Line Picks Up China-Focused Romantic Comedy Spec ‘Singles Day’

New Line Cinema has picked up a romantic comedy spec script from writer Lillian Yu called “Singles Day,” that focuses on the anti-Valentine’s Day Chinese holiday of the same name.

The move comes after the success of “Crazy Rich Asians,” the first film in 25 years — since 1993’s “The Joy Luck Club” — to have an all-Asian cast supported by a major studio.

“Singles Day” is conceived of as an ensemble romantic comedy in the vein of other New Line films such as “He’s Just Not That Into You,” “Valentine’s Day” and “New Year’s Eve.”

Singles Day, known in China as Guanggun Jie, takes place on Nov. 11 (because the four numeral ones represent four single people.) The idea emerged from Chinese universities during the 1990s and remains popular among young people.

New Line Acquires Lillian Yu Spec, Chinese-Centric Romantic Comedy ‘Singles Day’

Exclusive: While we await the inevitable word that Crazy Rich Asians will hatch a sequel, the impact of the weekend success of the romantic comedy with an all Asian cast is already being felt. That movie catching the zeitgeist has emboldened Hollywood to look for more stories to tell from Asian cultures that have long been underrepresented on movie screens.

New Line on Friday acquired the Lillian Yu spec script Singles Day, a Chinese-themed romantic comedy. It centers around an actual long-held Chinese holiday that falls on November 11 (its 11.11 digits signify being alone) in which celebrants take pride in being unattached. It is considered the anti-Valentine’s Day and is embraced by young people. It is a huge celebration in China, where e-commerce giant Alibaba last fall reported record Singles Day shopping sales splurges that reached $25 billion. While romantic comedies have had a tough time in Hollywood, they are a hot commodity in China.

Heidi Klum presses ‘America’s Got Talent’ Golden Buzzer for 15-year-old singer Makayla Phillips [Watch]
Makayla Phillips may have been the last act to perform on the July 10 episode of “America’s Got Talent” but she was the first (and only) one to get the golden buzzer, which sent her straight through to the live shows. Before performing the Demi Lovato hit “Warrior,” this soft-spoken 15-year-old girl admitted she was nervous, having watched every season of “Agt.” (Watch her audition video above.)

But when she sang, all trace of nerves was gone. Phillips sounds like a singer who has been performing for years. Her confidence even overwhelmed head judge Simon Cowell, who was grinning throughout her show-stopping number which ended with the crowd giving her a standing ovation.

Jam Out to These '80s Hits From Glow Season 2 - Perms Optional

  • Popsugar
We adore Netflix's Glow for its depiction of female friendship, its powerhouse cast, and of course, its unapologetically '80s soundtrack. Season two opened with Patty Smyth's energetic anthem "Warrior" playing to the electrifying neon pink title sequence. The nostalgic '80s music was here to stay. In fact, the show even blessed fans this season with original kitschy '80s-inspired music videos, which showcased, besides ludicrous lyrics, songstress Kate Nash's (who plays Rhonda) vocals.

While not all of season two's songs are from the '80s - Aretha Franklin's emotional '70s ballad "You're All I Need To Get By" is in the mix - most featured tracks pay homage to the neon-covered decade. There's something about moody lyrics set to drum machines and poppy synths that puts you in a sing-along mood, you know? From Run-dmc's upbeat "It's Like That" to Starship's "Nothing's Going to Stop Us Now,

Gal Gadot And Chris Pine Are On The Run In New Wonder Woman 1984 Set Pics

Of the various DC movies to arrive before the current decade expires, it may be safe to say that Wonder Woman 1984 is the most eagerly anticipated. After all, not only was the first film a smashing success at the box office, but it was just so damn good as well.

Helping to sate our appetites in recent memory have been the official unveilings of the Amazon Warrior’s new costume, as well as her next nemesis, the Cheetah. Well, technically, director Patty Jenkins has only yet to show off Kristen Wiig as Barbara Minerva, the human side of the equation, but we’re guessing we’ll see what she looks like in bestial form before long.

As for what’s to be discussed today, the latest exhibits to be witnessed are that of some set photos showing Gal Gadot and Chris Pine reprising their respective roles as Diana Prince and Steve Trevor.

‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Writer On The Oprah Surprise And June’s “Warrior” Evolution

It’s been another dramatic ride this season on the Emmy-winning “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Series creator Bruce Miller and his writing staff have forged their own path after the first season mostly followed Margret Atwood‘s classic novel and, in so doing, have found inspiration from the darkest timeline many Americans are now experiencing. The events depicted often seem too close to home, but there have been rays of hope here and there that make you believe that June/Offred (Elisabeth Moss) and the other Handmaids may escape the nightmare of the former mainland United States, now an extreme authoritarian regime known as Gilead.

Here’s Your First Look At Kristen Wiig As Barbara Minerva In Wonder Woman 1984

With all the hoopla surrounding the reveal of Wonder Woman 1984‘s official title a couple weeks back – not to mention the first image showing Gal Gadot in full costume being released days later – it’s important that we not experience sensory overload and remember what else the picture has to offer.

That said, one of the biggest talking points surrounding any superhero flick is that of whom the main villain will be. In this case, it’s the Cheetah, who’ll be played by Kristen Wiig. Though not perhaps the first person who’d spring to mind for this particular gig, we can’t rule out the famed comedian from churning out a memorable dramatic performance like, say, the late Robin Williams did in films such as One Hour Photo or Insomnia.

So, while rumors begin circulating that we’ll see Wiig as the full-on Cheetah in some sort
