Karlovy Vary: Films Boutique Kicks in Sales on ‘The Cakemaker,’ ‘Los Perros’ (Exclusive)

Berlin-based Films Boutique, a sales company that is belying its moniker with breakouts such as “Divines” and “On Body and Soul,” has kicked in sales on Karlovy Vary Competition entry “The Cakemaker” and “Los Perros,” which screens in Another View.

Of other Films Boutique titles, Indian Miransha Naik’s “Juze” plays out of competition, while German Valeska Grisebach’s “Western,” world premiering in Cannes Un Certain Regard, is in Horizons. That makes for a four-picture presence – among the largest of any sales company at Karlovy Vary.

“We try to grow with the films and directors we represent,” said Films Boutique international sales executive Louis Balsan, who will attend Karlovy Vary with Gabor Greiner who oversees acquisitions. “That means we might now have more in bigger festival sections,” Balsan added.

Israeli writer-director Ofir Raul Graizer’s feature debut, “The Cakemaker,” which world premieres at Karlovy Vary, turns on Thomas, played by German TV actor Tim Kalkhof, who

Locarno: Drama On Auschwitz Founder Rudolf Hoess Being Touted As First Time An Israeli Director Will Give Voice To The Perpetrator (Exclusive)
Locarno – Israel and Germany are co-producing “The Interrogation,” a drama based on the autobiography of Auschwitz founder and commander Rudolf Hoess, held responsible for 1.1 million deaths. Israeli company Daroma Productions says the film marks “the first time a Jewish director deals with the Holocaust and gives a voice to the perpetrator.”

The director is Israeli filmmaker and film scholar Erez Pery, making his feature film debut. Pery also wrote the screenplay, based on Hoess’s book “Commandant of Auschwitz.” He is artistic director of the Cinema South International Film Festival in Israel and author of a Ph.D dissertation titled “The Cinematic Logic of the Nazi Death Camp and Its Influence on Modern Post War Cinema.”

Daroma Productions, which is among companies in attendance at the Locarno Film Festival’s First Look on Israeli Cinema spotlight, is co-producing this potentially powerful movie with Mathias Schwerbrock’s Film Base Berlin.

Aamir Khan’s ‘Pk’ Heads for September Release in Korea

Aamir Khan’s ‘Pk’ Heads for September Release in Korea
Record-breaking Indian comedy drama “Pk” will get a theatrical release in South Korea in September.

Specialty distributor Waw Pictures has announced a Sept. 3 date for the Rajkumar Hirani-directed picture fronted by Indian superstar Aamir Khan.

The Utv / Disney-backed picture was an unsurprising hit in India and normal diaspora market, but also obliterated box office records for an Indian movie in China. Released in May this year, it grossed $19.4 million. (U.K. earnings were $3.17 million, while in North America it topped $10.6 million.)

Indian films have had flurries of success in Korea. After the global sensation of British-made, Indian-set “Slumdog Millionaire,” Indian originated films including Hirani and Khan’s ‘3 Idiots” and “My Name Is Khan” became hits with some 450,000 ticket sales for ‘3 Idiots.”

Since then, however, other titles have struggled as the novelty of Indian films pales and as exhibitors become less tolerant of two and a half hour running times.

Poland Lures Foreign Films as Local Biz Rises

Poland Lures Foreign Films as Local Biz Rises
You would never guess from the level of international co-productions heading toward Poland that the country remains one of the few in this corner of Europe without cash-back incentives.

Agnieszka Odorowicz, topper at the Polish Film Institute, is justifiably bullish on the rising number of such joint projects — currently at around 40 per year — but has said the lack of sweeteners is an issue that needs to be addressed. But even without them, the institute’s work is clearly reaping rewards.

Since 2005, some 130 production companies have set up shop in Poland, many of them capitalizing on financial support from the Pfi, which administers a film fund created through a tax on television, exhibitors and distribs passed a decade ago. More and more of these new players, the recipients of more than 500 film grants, are partnering with foreigners to the benefit of both parties. In 2014, the institute’s budget was $42 million for development,
