A real review
21 October 2018 | by jwcstorageSee all my reviews

We start out with an uninteresting opening scene that is completely pointless and jump into a stereotypical stupid family complete with a jock AND goth'ish punk bitchy daughter and clueless dad!!! "WHATS QUEEF"!! BRILLIANT!! (*heavy sarcasm*)

The original The Strangers was decent enough to warrant a cash grab reboot so here it is! The three amigos in masks are back at it again! Unfortunately.

While the original had a unique premise and a solid dread building beginning before the movie changed to its "why us?!" reality that would realistically exist in a home-invasion torture situation. This still bears its "based on true events" without saying more leaving us to only guess which events. Neither are important because this movie just kind of happens to start. Theres no character development for us to really care about the main characters, and some info is randomly tossed out for no real sake that I guess we are supposed to care about. Unfortunately, we dont.

Ok so its a slasher-type flick so is the action or suspense or horror there? No. The movie kicks off with the same girl-in-the-dark knocking at the door late at night and asking if Tamara is there. There isnt the same lead up as there was in the first film so this has no feeling of suspense or dread. Its more like an "Ok, we must have hit the 'time to introduce the slashers' moment."

This time we have four targets for the strangers to go after so you are hoping for possibly a more realistic survival attempt this time but we have convenient plot devices to split the family up... for no reason. Only to bring them together and split them up again... for no reason again.

The movie just kinda goes on from there. It wasnt scary enough to feel horror'y and it wasnt slasher'y enough to feel like a slasher. It almost felt supernatural, which will be repeated, as the strangers do all kinds of stuff they shouldnt be able to do.

There was one almost great scene in the middle of movie involving a car crash that should have gone on much longer but instead it just ends. Since the strangers seem to love both torture AND murder it seems that they would have extended the scene but no. Good setup wasted.

The characters are dumb as bricks and the strangers were basically supernatural most of the time, popping up outta no where, conveniently knowing where the family was at all times, able to setup impossible to predict scenarios where the family does exactly what was needed for this movie to exist.

If you were hoping for some answers from the first film you'll be sorely disappointed. Why will you be sorely disappointed? "Why not?"

If you're desperate enough for a bit of slashy actiony horror this might scratch the itch but its just blatant plot convenience for the murderers, showing up places they shouldnt and disappearing when they need to, for most of the flick. The worst part is that not only do they have supernatural knowledge of the location of the characters, they themselves are leaning into the supernatural territory themselves surviving things they shouldnt have!!!

This isnt a good movie, and it diminishes my feelings for the original. The camerawork was pretty flat but decent while either the lighting or post-production kept the movie dark but very visible. This movie doesnt suffer from a lot of other "dark" movies with scenes almost pitch black. The acting was pretty meh across the board. The horror score was unremarkable but the soundtrack were a bunch of oldie hits which didnt really suit the film but were fine. There were a few neat set-pieces that were a bit anti-climactic. The way it ended was bad and was very non-cathartic. I hope the franchise dies here, but I have a feeling they'll be back "somehow" and it will still be "based on true events"... somehow.
