Welcome to New Orleans
1 June 2010 | by njmolloSee all my reviews

After the superb series The Wire and the equally brilliant Generation Kill, David Simon brings us Treme.

Treme is a New Orleans neighbourhood suffering greatly from the after effects of Hurricane Katrina. Government bureaucracy, indifference and corruption compound the almost post-war-like situation.

This is very different from David Simon's previous work and comparisons can be made but will inevitably be fruitless. This drama revolves around the lives of a diverse set of characters that struggle to exist in Treme district.

The most disturbing and moving documentary about Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath is Welcome to New Orleans (2006) and Treme being a drama on the same subject, in many ways is as moving and provocative.

The casting is on the whole excellent with Khandi Alexander, Wendell Pierce, Lucia Micarelli and Clarke Peters being the standouts. John Goodman somehow feels out of place and less authentic than the rest of the cast but this could be because of all the excess baggage he brings by way of other film roles. I would have preferred Delaney Williams to have been cast in the role of Creighton Bernette and am sure as such an eloquent and talented actor, he could have nailed the part.

The real star of Treme is the music. The live performances are excellently recorded and freshly filmed, so that you really feel that you are there, in that bar, nightclub or strip joint.

The issues raised in this series are important but the most disturbing is the fact that the American Government could treat its own people in such a despicable fashion. Brilliant Television!!
