Goofs
It is implied that the alien pulse has permanently disabled motor vehicles, because no-one ever attempts to use any abandoned cars. However, Catherine, Sophia and Nathan find a man attempting suicide in his car with the engine running. When they ask him how he got the engine running, he says that it is old and therefore simpler to repair. However, the car seems reasonably modern and would contain a lot of the electronics that would be fried by the pulse.
