Vma Exec Producer Jesse Ignjatovic Talks Aretha Franklin Tribute

  • Variety
No matter how many big shows a person might have attended, the sight of a major arena production being assembled still astonishes. On Friday morning, approximately 80 hours before MTV’s Tk annual Video Music Awards begin, New York’s legendary Radio City Music Hall was in the process of being transformed: the stage was loaded with towering sets and light structures swooping overheard, a giant lighting rig covered approximately a third of the ceiling, 1,500 seats had been removed to expand the main stage or clear the way for other stages and camera platforms, and the venue’s iconic lobby was nearly completely filled with anvil cases; hundreds of staffers and technicians bustled everywhere while announcements crackled across the Pa. Huge light structures loomed over the sides of the room and hung from the front of the balconies. (Head here for Variety’s exclusive look at the set of the 2018 VMAs.

Is 'Crazy Rich Asians' Looking at a Crazy Rich Opening Weekend?

Is 'Crazy Rich Asians' Looking at a Crazy Rich Opening Weekend?
This weekend gets off to an early start with the Wednesday release of the much-anticipated romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians, the first Asian-led studio film to hit theaters since The Joy Luck Club. While Joy Luck Club didn't play in any more than 600 theaters during its run 25 years ago, Crazy Rich Asians will get its start in over 3,200 locations with plenty of buzz behind it.

Later in the week, STX will release what they hope is a franchise-starter in Mile 22 featuring Mark Wahlberg re-teaming with director Peter Berg, while Sony's Studio 8 will release Alpha.

Beginning with Crazy Rich Asians, the adaptation of Kevin Kwan's novel of the same name has been making headlines for some time now. Originally published in 2013, the book has found a place on Amazon Charts for the past five weeks, currently ranking as the third most sold fiction title on the site, up

The 12 Best Trash Movies of 2018 So Far, from ‘Den of Thieves’ to ‘Skyscraper’

From me, the “trash” moniker is high praise. These are movies that are not appreciated by the greater culture — none have earned a Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes — but which instead are B-style movies that are more concerned with delivering feels, thrills and titillation than with “respectability.” For me, this is the good stuff — the best of Hollywood’s delightful blue collar flicks.

12. “Proud Mary” — This is the story of a depressed assassin (Taraji P. Henson) who wants to get out of the life but is just too damn tired to take the initiative. It’s a weird story for a movie, but one that is probably the most relatable movie about a hitman ever.

11. “The Hurricane Heist” — This one is surprisingly topical. It’s got climate change, economic anxiety, corrupt trigger-happy cops, and a situation too dire for anyone not in the immediate area to be able to help.

‘Hunter Killer’ Trailer: Gerard Butler And Gary Oldman Go To War With Russia In A Submarine

Between “Geostorm” and “Den of Thieves,” [Editor’s note: ‘Den of Thieves’ isn’t terrible. Honestly. I swear.] the recent track record of Gerard Butler hardly has us counting down the days until the “300” star’s next feature, but there’s always a chance that action-thriller “Hunter Killer” will at least serve as an amusing placeholder between “How to Train Your Dragon” sequels.

Weekend Forecast: 'Uncle Drew' & 'Sicario 2' Offer Blockbuster Alternatives

Weekend Forecast: 'Uncle Drew' & 'Sicario 2' Offer Blockbuster Alternatives
Last weekend delivered the largest overall June weekend ever. The top twelve films grossed a combined $271.2 million, of which the top two films — Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Incredibles 2 — accounted for 84% of that gross. While this weekend's two new wide releases — Summit's Uncle Drew and Sony's Sicario: Day of the Soldado — offer an alternative to summer blockbuster fair, last weekend's chart toppers will once again dominate, expected to combine for over $100 million alone. Overall, Summer 2018 has grossed over $2 billion thus far, pacing ~18% ahead of last year's dismal returns, which resulted in the worst summer movie season in over ten years. This year's summer grosses are contributing to a year that is currently pacing 9% ahead of 2017 while the month of June alone is pacing 16% ahead of last year, currently positioned as the second largest June ever. This weekend looks to keep that pace, expected to deliver a combined gross ahead

50 Cent Takes Down Post Mocking Terry Crews Days Before ‘Power’ Season 5 Premiere
Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson took to Instagram to bash Terry Crews after the Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor testified before a Senate Judiciary Committee about sexual assault by a Hollywood agent.

The Instagram post included an image of shirtless Crews with the words “I got raped. My wife just watched.” It also featured second photo of Crews in a suit with a rose in his mouth with the words “Gym time.”

In addition to this flimsy meme, 50 Cent wrote in the caption: “Lol,What the f*ck is going on out here man? Terry: I froze in fear. they would have had to take me to jail. get the strap.” Peppered with emojis, the caption was clearly an attempt to take mocking jabs at Crews. The Instagram post has since been taken down. A screen shot of the post can be seen below.

The post comes days before Sunday’s season 5 premiere of Power,

  • Variety
Marvel’s “Black Panther,” distributed by Walt Disney Studios, topped both national home video sales charts the week ended June 2, marking its third consecutive week as the country’s top-selling DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

The sci-fi horror film “Annihilation,” a theatrical underperformer from Paramount Pictures, debuted at No. 2 on both the Npd VideoScan overall disc sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart. According to Npd data, the film, which earned just over $32 million in U.S. theaters, sold 38% as many units its first week in stores as “Black Panther” did in the superhero film’s third week of availability.

Twentieth Century Fox’s spy thriller “Red Sparrow” slipped a spot on both charts to No.

‘Den of Thieves’ Blu-ray Review

Stars: Gerard Butler, Pablo Schreiber, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Dawn Olivieri, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Evan Jones, Cooper Andrews, Lewis Tan, Maurice Compte, Mo McRae | Written by Christian Gudegast, Paul Scheuring | Directed by Christian Gudegast

Gerard Butler and Pablo Schreiber star in this off-the-boil Heat knock-off from writer-director Christian Gudegast, the screenwriter of London Has Fallen, here making his directing debut. However, while there are a handful of strong moments in the film, it ultimately falls short of its ambitions, thanks to some shoddy story-telling choices.

Set in present-day Los Angeles, the film centres on two grizzled hombres on either side of the law: swaggering cop “Big Nick” Flanagan (Gerard Butler) and criminal mastermind Ray Merrimen (Pablo Schreiber), whose opening gambit is to steal an empty armoured car in broad daylight. When Nick leans on bartender-slash-getaway-driver Donnie (O’Shea Jackson Jr.) for information, he learns that Merrimen has a big heist planned,
