Reviews for The Phantom Menace were, it’s fair to say, mixed. Looking back on it, that’s understandable. It’s a mixed film. After a lot of excitement and hype for the return of the game-changing franchise, some anti-climax was inevitable. 133 minutes and countless midi-chlorians later, a sense of disappointment gave way to rage for some.
Attack of the Clones had an improved, if not stellar, critical reception and Revenge of the Sith continued this trend to be recognized as the best of the three. That said, despite the upward trajectory there was a sense that these films would never recover from their initial mauling and that their lasting legacy would be their failure to recapture the magic of the Original Trilogy in a sustained way.
But 25 years after the release of The Phantom Menace,...

Hidden in the darker recesses of the internet are some sinister and threatening places which act as insidious catalysts for a variety of radicalising groups amongst them Incels (Involuntary celibates), whose alarming appeal to isolated men is starkly depicted in Robin Summons’ latest short Victim. The Australian filmmaker – who we last saw on Dn’s pages with thought-provoking therapist drama Occupation – doesn’t however focus on the expected vantage point of his disturbing subject matter but instead examines the impact such radicalisation has on a mother and son’s relationship, and the terrifying conflict of emotions faced by any parent in such a situation. Shot entirely on 16mm, Victim focuses on the mundanity of this escalating suburban nightmare as it metastasizes behind the locked door of a teenage bedroom, stoking the parental terror of knowing that your increasingly distant child has not only the capacity but perhaps the intention do real irrevocable harm.

A new Broadway season has started, and there are currently 11 productions of plays set to open this fall. Could we be seeing any of them contend at next year’s Tony Awards? Below is an overview of the plot of each play as well as the awards history of its author, cast, creative team, and the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.
“Death of a Salesman”
In the fifth Broadway revival of Arthur Miller’s 1949 drama, Willy Loman is a traveling salesman whose illusions of picture-perfect business and family life cave in on him. He and his family are caught up in the pressures and delusions of living the American dream.
The original production directed by Elia Kazan won six Tony Awards (including Best Play) and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. This staging follows a successful run on London’s West End back in 2019, where it received five Laurence Olivier...

Matt Smith has some interesting casting ideas for when The Crown eventually brings Meghan Markle into the fold. The 35-year-old Netflix star currently plays Prince Philip on the popular drama about the British monarchy.
Smith and his co-star, Claire Foy, appeared on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen on Thursday where a caller asked them who they wanted to play Markle on the screen.
“The thing is they’re so young, aren’t they? And they’re probably not going to be on the show for another five years, so we’re going to have to choose someone who’s about 11 or 12,” Foy, 33, who plays Queen Elizabeth, said.
But Smith had someone else in mind.
“Who’s that singer? The singer who…” he began.
“Ed Sheeran?” Cohen guessed, thinking Smith was casting the red headed royal, Prince Harry.

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.
For the vast majority of female filmmakers, the second-film slump is real. Getting that first movie made might sound like the biggest challenge for any fledgling filmmaker, but for so many women in the industry, turning first film buzz into new opportunities is an uphill battle that few can win. For “Appropriate Behavior” filmmaker and star Desiree Akhavan, the realization that her status as a festival darling wasn’t going to automatically translate into a huge Hollywood career came hard. Good thing she didn’t really want that anyway.
“Because I had only made one feature and I was a woman, I didn’t have the best opportunities,” Akhavan told IndieWire. “It’s crazy when I think of men who premiere a first film at Sundance and then get offered franchises. That was not happening to me,...

Oscars 2017: Justin Timberlake, John Legend, Sting and Lin-Manuel Miranda to Perform Nominated Songs
Oscar-show producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd did not miss the opportunity to sign up nominees Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sting, Justin Timberlake and 2014 Oscar-winner John Legend to perform all five nominated original songs at the 89th Academy Awards. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the Oscars will air live on Sunday, February 26 on ABC.
“These performances will not only celebrate the five extraordinary nominated original songs, but also the integral part music plays in movies,” stated De Luca and Todd.
Legend will perform both “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)” and “City of Stars,” from “La La Land” (music by Justin Hurwitz; lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul), dashing any hopes that stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling would do the honors. Singer-songwriter Legend shared with Common an Oscar for the original song “Glory” from “Selma” (2014). Legend has won 10 Grammy Awards from 28 nominations.

In the middle of summer, when moviegoing options are slim, it’s hard to visualize the sheer scope of films that will screen this fall at the Toronto International Film Festival. No single film commands all the buzz, nor can one lineup, and so the first big announcement — featuring the Galas and Special Presentations — can only begin to provide some insight into the titles worthy of anticipation.
Still, there’s a lot to dig through: Oscar hopefuls looking to gain momentum (“The Birth of a Nation,” “Loving” and more detailed here); big-budget studio efforts hoping to earn some upscale cred (Peter Berg’s “Deepwater Horizon,” Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi “Arrival”); veteran filmmakers still pursuing the kind of topics that put them on the map (Oliver Stone’s “Snowden,” Mira Nair’s “Queen of Katwe”).

When the news broke that Madonna was slated to honor Prince at the 2016 Billboard awards, the reaction was … mixed. For example, someone started a Change.org petition decrying the choice, and news of the outcry apparently reached Billboard executive producer Mark Bracco, who defended the decision to have Madonna perform on Tuesday to the Associated Press. Madonna and Prince had something of a tangled relationship, to put it mildly: Consensus seems to be that they dated in the mid-'80s. They collaborated in 1989 for "Love Song," from Madonna's album Like a Prayer. At some point, their relationship soured, to...

Early Monday morning, a glut of musicians changed their social-media avatars in a show of support for Jay Z and his newly acquired and relaunched streaming service, Tidal. Artists including Nicki Minaj, Jack White, Madonna, Rihanna, Kanye West, and Beyoncé turned their avatars teal blue and used the hashtag #TIDALforALL to tease Jay Z's Tidal, which purportedly combines hi-fi sound, hi-def music videos, and expertly curated editorial (whatever that means). "Change your avi in support of what is fair, of what is the future," Minaj wrote on Instagram. "The tides have changed." Jay Z will shed more light on Tidal at a press conference Monday afternoon at New York's James A. It's Big Band Week on The X Factor - and there's been drama before tonight's sing-a-thon even got underway!
Join us from 8.15pm for this year's big, brassy extravaganza, with jazz classics, reworked pop hits and some interesting medleys.
21:49Tomorrow night, Olly, Scherzy and Geldy - well, the world exclusive premiere of (a rough cut of) 'Band Aid 30' - see you then, you brave, persevering lot!
21:47Cheryl wanted to give Fleur "props" - though presumably only if it doesn't take away any of her own performance budget?
21:45So who was your favourite act tonight? And who was the weakest singer? Were you entertained by the Judges' banter or do they need to get their act together?
21:44Simon echoes our own wise words - Fleur's "fantastic" performances are on a par with the Sunday night guest performers. He believes she can win - and so do we!

[As you probably already know, starting on Thursday, August 21, Fxx is running the Every Simpsons Ever Marathon, running through all 552 episodes of "The Simpsons," plus "The Simpsons Movie." To aid in your viewing process, Team HitFix is selecting our favorite episodes from each day, plus an episode or two that you can skip and use as a bathroom or nap break.] And then there were only two. Day 8 of Fxx's Every Simpsons Ever Marathon takes us from "The Regina Monologues" to "The Italian Bob," or from early in Season 15 through to early in Season 17. Honestly, I think that some of these are mighty funny installments for a show that went past its 350th episode in this period, but there's no question that a fair amount of repetitiveness had set in here and an impressive number of plots feel either cribbed from earlier shows, or at least siblings to earlier plots. I mean... Homer gets an Rv again! Sideshow Bob tries to kill Bart a couple times! The Simpsons go to... Italy and England and China! Perhaps that's why we're now just down to me and Sepinwall and Katie Hasty giving recommendations. But don't worry, we offered five up good episodes and I added two episodes that you can skip, though I...

Queen Bey met one of the queens of Gossip Girl when Beyoncé and Blake Lively linked up for a Chime For Change cocktail reception in NYC on Tuesday night. Other guests included Beyoncé's sister, Solange Knowles, Gucci spokesman James Franco, and Gucci's creative director, Frida Giannini. Chime For Change was founded last year by Beyoncé, Frida, and Salma Hayek, who is married to François-Henri Pinault, the CEO of Kering, the company that owns Gucci. The cocktail hour was meant to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Chime For Change concert in London, which featured performances by Beyoncé, Jay Z, and Jennifer Lopez and had an A-list roster of celebrity presenters, including Blake, James, Jessica Chastain, and Madonna. Beyoncé also used the occasion as a change to announce that she will be donating $500,000 to charities aimed at girls and women. Beyoncé didn't have to travel far for her party night with her sister,...

We’re here in the final stretch of the “Saturday Night Live” season, with just three consecutive episodes separating us and wild speculation about the fortieth season of the program. I have a few thoughts on what to look for over these three weeks, but the promos this week suggest “SNL” might have an extremely fun and game host in Garfield. He has cameo’d in the past when real-life girlfriend Emma Stone has hosted (look for her to return the favor tonight), but this is his first chance to show the comedic touches he brings to Peter Parker in a sketch-comedy setting. Along for the ride is musical guest Coldplay, who ironically last appeared on “SNL” when Stone hosted. Maybe Spider-Man will fight them as two-thirds of The Sinister Six. Not an Extremely sinister six, I’d grant you. But hey, what do I know? As always, I’ll be liveblogging,...

How cute are Fifth Harmony? So very cute. I caught up with "The X Factor" fivesome on the red carpet at the American Music Awards earlier this week, fresh off of singing "Better Together" in the AMAs pre-show. While most of Europe welcomed Selena with open arms when she traveled the continent on her ‘Stars Dance’ tour, Russia was not so eager to greet her. Sel was set to perform two concerts in the former communist nation in September, but Russian officials have turned down her visa request, apparently because Selena supports gay rights. How shocking!
Selena Gomez may be America’s sweetheart, but Russia is not too fond of the 21-year-old actress and singer. Organizers for the two concerts Selena had scheduled at St. Petersburg’s Ice Palace on Sept. 23 and Moscow’s Olimiisky stadium on Sept. 25 told The Moscow Times that Russian officials denied Sel’s request to enter the country under its new anti-gay law.
