Arrested Development: Remixing Isn’t Fixing

Eric Bay-Andersen on Arrested Development…

Some shows (like The Simpsons) carry on well past their prime, some shows start off great but lose a little of their spark towards the end (like Friends and Frasier), but some shows have a short and sweet run, leaving behind a legacy of untarnished brilliance. Arrested Development used to be one of those shows, until they made a huge mistake by bringing it back on Netflix for an experimental fourth season. I cannot describe the heartbreak and disappointment I felt watching a show that used to be a masterclass in writing, acting and editing, devolve into something that was now unfocused, unnecessary and unfunny. It was like the writers came up with a list of all the reasons why the show used to work so well and then made a conscious decision to ignore them all, chief among them being that they decided to

Seth Rogen on James Franco After Misconduct Accusations: ‘Yes’ I’ll Still Work With Him

Seth Rogen on James Franco After Misconduct Accusations: ‘Yes’ I’ll Still Work With Him
After several months, Seth Rogen has finally weighed in on the sexual misconduct accusations waged against his friend and longtime comedic collaborator James Franco, saying he’ll continue to work with Franco on future projects.

In an interview with Vulture, Franco was asked about his thoughts on the #MeToo movement, and he said that he had remained silent for so long because he didn’t feel his perspective was important to the cause.

“I’m friends with these people and I’m a dude. All that combined makes me the last person who should be talking about this,” he said. “There are so many people with real things to contribute to the #MeToo discussion that anything I say is not going to add anything useful,” he added.

Franco and Rogen have worked on several films together, including “Pineapple Express,” “This Is The End,” and most recently, the animated comedy “Sausage Party.” But when asked if he would make another film with Franco, Rogen replied: “Yes.”

Franco was accused of sexual misconduct by five women in January, just days after winning a Golden Globe for his performance in “The Disaster Artist.” Four accusers were Franco’s students at his acting school, and another said the actor was her mentor. They said he behaved in inappropriate or sexually exploitative ways. “I feel there was an abuse of power, and there was a culture of exploiting non-celebrity women, and a culture of women being replaceable,” one accuser, Sarah Tither-Kaplan, told the Los Angeles Times in January.

Immediately following the accusations, a “Disaster Artist” Q&A featuring Franco was cancelled by The New York Times, and the actor was digitally removed from the cover of Vanity Fair’s Hollywood issue.

However, Megan Abbott, a writer for the HBO series “The Deuce,” said in February that Franco would return for the show’s second season. Franco plays a lead role in the series, and is also an executive producer and directed two of the show’s episodes.

After the accusations were made, Franco discussed them in an appearance on “Late Night With Seth Meyers.”

“There are people that need to be heard,” Franco said. “I have my own side of this story, but I believe in these people that have been underrepresented getting their stories out enough that I will hold back things that I could say, just because I believe in it that much,” he said. “So if I have to take a knock because I’m not going to try and actively refute things, then I will, because I believe in it that much.”

Target Runs, Press Tours and Hanging With The Bachelor: Inside Channing Tatum's Life Post Split

Target Runs, Press Tours and Hanging With The Bachelor: Inside Channing Tatum's Life Post Split
Timid is a word that just might not exist in Channing Tatum's vocabulary. "I get one shot at life, and I can say that I've lived a crazy one, and I've pushed the limit almost at every turn," he bragged in a 2014 GQ profile, "and I'm super proud of that." Granted, he was pontificating on his decision to play Danny McBride's pimp in Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill's 2013 gross out comedy This Is the End, in which he wears both a leash and a Mexican wrestling mask and, in one deleted scene, drinks the blood squirting from James Franco's severed left limb. But he could have just as easily been discussing his first official post-break up activity. Three weeks after announcing...

Movie Review: Game Night

It wasn’t so long ago that hard R-rated comedies were coming out every week. The Hangover (2009) seemed to come out of nowhere and rejuvenate the genre to blockbuster heights. In the years following we got the likes of Bad Teacher (2011), Hot Tub Time Machine (2010), This is the End (2013), two more incredibly unfunny Hangover sequels (2011/2013), and Horrible Bosses (2011). There were many more of course, but it’s that last one that draws a tie to the latest hard R-rated comedy attempting to hit the zeitgeist. Horrible Bosses came out in the summer of 2011 when we were bombarded with blockbusters like Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, X-Men: First Class, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The comedy was a huge success for the studio as it entertained audiences without over-sensitizing them.

Flash forward almost seven years later and you’ll notice Warner Bros.

Romance Free Films this Valentine’s Day

Sade Green with five alternate viewing suggestions for Valentine’s Day…

It’s Valentine’s Day. But for a fairly large percentage of the population, this means Nothing! Perhaps you and your partner don’t celebrate it. Maybe you’ve just been through a big break up. Or perhaps you just despise the commercial aspect of it all. Regardless of your reasons, here are five comedies that are completely devoid of romance (although there may be the occasional bromance).

FX has opted not to pick up to series Singularity, a futuristic comedy pilot from comedy writer Sonny Lee (Silicon Valley) and producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Conceived by Lee, the comedy starring Damon Wayans Jr. and Amanda Lund, was set in a future when artificial intelligence greatly surpasses human intelligence, resulting in profound changes to our society. Singularity was said to be similar in tone to Rogen and Goldberg's disaster movie This Is the End, which…

Danny McBride & Rosemarie DeWitt Shine In Overcooked ‘Arizona’ [Sundance Review]

Danny McBride has always been a great screen presence, whether in indies such as David Gordon Green‘s “All the Real Girls,” right through to comedies such as “Pineapple Express” and “This is the End.” He’s always elevated whatever he’s been in with his unique style of slacker comedy. McBride’s greater impact, h0wever, might have been on television where he built the legend of failed professional baseball pitcher Kenny Powers in four successful seasons on HBO‘s “Eastbound and Down.”

In “Arizona,” directed by Jonathan Watson, McBride is given an all-too-rare leading role as Sonny.

‘The Disaster Artist’ Dp Brandon Trost on Recreating Bad Movie Scenes & Working with James Franco

By and large, comedies are not made to look cinematic. More often than not, the frame is flooded with light, the camera is locked down, and the actors are left to keep things interesting. That’s why cinematographer Brandon Trost has been such a breath of fresh air. Through films like This Is the End, Neighbors, The Night Before, and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Trost has gone to great lengths to create a dynamic frame with compelling camera movements. It never detracts from the comedy at hand, but it also makes the film feel downright cinematic and not at …
