OxyContin is the brand name for the extended release formulation of the opioid analgesic oxycodone. One of the reasons OxyContin is more deadly than other forms of oxycodone when abused is that is has a much larger dose. Immediate release oxycodone/acetaminophen tablets like Percocet contain either 2.5, 5, 7.5 or 10 milligrams. Oxycodone IR (which are tablets with oxycodone only that release all the medication at once) come in strengths of either 5, 10, 15, 20 & 30 mg per tablet. Whereas OxyContin comes in strengths of 10, 20, 30, 40, 60 & 80 mg. When taken as directed the tablet slowly releases its dose over a period of 8-12 hours depending on the person's metabolism, but if the tablets are crushed then all of the dose is released at once which is very dangerous, especially when dealing with the larger strengths. Plus inhaling or injecting oxycodone further increases its potency, 80 mg of oxycodone taken intravenously would be the same as about 110 mg taken orally, which is dangerous for anyone but for someone that has little to no tolerance for opioids it would be deadly.
