Snapchat Shows: Inside the Plan to Reimagine TV for the Mobile Era

When Elisabeth Murdoch said goodbye to the family business in the wake of the News Corp. phone-hacking scandal in 2014, there was considerable anticipation regarding her next career move. The safe bet was that she’d find something to do in the television industry, where she had cranked out global hit series formats from “MasterChef” to “Big Brother” for Shine Group, which she’d sold to her father for $675 million.

But when Murdoch resurfaced in 2015, she focused her programming savvy not on TV but on a single digital platform: Snapchat.

Her new venture, Vertical Networks, has produced only for the Venice, Calif.-based messaging app, and includes a trio of so-called Snapchat Shows, a short-form video format exclusive to the Snapchat platform. As Murdoch sees it, the seismic shift a new generation of younger viewers is making from TV to mobile can no longer be ignored.

Weezy was a guest on Espn's College GameDay and had a prime seat right beside Corso. However -- in the middle of making picks -- Lee snatched Weezy's pinky ring and put it on himself. The whole thing was obviously done in good fun -- and Weezy laughed it off -- but you gotta imagine

Snapchat Launches ‘Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ Offshoot

Snapchat Launches ‘Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ Offshoot
Every time Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake get together to sing with comedic flair on NBC’s “Tonight Show,” the video is everywhere you look on social media the next day.

But if you’re not on Snapchat, you will miss their latest collaboration.

That’s because a four-minute performance of songs they improvised based on fictional title submissions from Snapchat users is exclusive to that fast-growing social platform as of Thursday morning.

It’s the most recent example of what the Venice-based company is calling Snapchat Shows, a new offering distinct from Live Stories and Discover, the content formats that have powered 10 billion views per day on the app worldwide (as of the last count publicly disclosed back in April).

Simply titled “Fallon,” the short-form series is the latest collaboration between NBCUniversal and Snapchat parent company Snap, which announced a multi-year deal in August that will see multiple TV properties get their own social-centric adaptations of

Katy Perry Says She Did Not Pay for Super Bowl Halftime Gig

Katy Perry headlining 2015 Super Bowl Halftime show
Looks like Katy Perry may "Roar" during the halftime show at Super Bowl Xlix. Last night, the New York Post reported that a deal was being "hammered out" for the pop star. Then, an hour later, Billboard said its own sources were confirming the slot. In August, it was said that Perry was on a shortlist with two other pop acts -- Coldplay and Rihanna -- to play the Feb. 1, 2015 gig at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona; Rihanna's subsequent fallout with the NFL, since then, has already been documented. However, that shortlist came with an actual price: the NFL, a registered "non-profit" in the United States, had been debating whether or not to require halftime performers to actually pay the league to perform. Perry, just this past Sunday on Espn's "College Gameday," said, "I’m not the kind of girl who would pay to play the Super Bowl.

Katy Perry to Play the Super Bowl Halftime Show
A few days after saying that she was "not the type of girl that would pay to play the Super Bowl” on Espn’s College GameDay, the New York Post's "Page Six" reports that “a deal is being hammered out” for Katy Perry to be Super Bowl Xlix's halftime performer. So either the NFL changed its mind or Perry decided she is that kind of girl after all. We hope she wears her pink, fuzzy jumper.

Katy Perry to Play Super Bowl Halftime Show
Katy Perry will perform at the Super Bowl Xlix halftime show, sources confirm.

The pop star recently appeared on Espn’s “College Gameday,” successfully picking Ole Miss to upset Alabama.

In the interview, she also said she’s “not the kind of girl to pay to play the Super Bowl.” The NFL reportedly asked Perry, Coldplay and Rihanna if they would be willing to pay to play the colossal ratings event but were given the cold shoulder.

The 2015 Super Bowl, held in Glendale, Arizona, will air Feb. 1 on NBC.

Last year’s Super Bowl between the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos was the most-watched TV event ever, drawing a staggering 111 million viewers.

Katy Perry Denies Super Bowl Rumors, Might Still Do the Super Bowl

Katy Perry Denies Super Bowl Rumors, Might Still Do the Super Bowl
Katy Perry popped up on Espn’s College GameDay this weekend, hung out with hosts Lee Corso and Chris Fowler, made some sports predictions ("by their colors"), and sorta denied, sorta confirmed Super Bowl rumors: "I have let them know that I’m not the type of girl that would pay to play the Super Bowl, so the ball is in their field." She's referring to The Wall Street Journal's report that this year would be the first the NFL would ask for artists to pay to play the Halftime Show — a request that they've put out to Coldplay, Rihanna, and Perry. Are we being thrown for a loop here? Perry is the perfect Super Bowl candidate: She's got the recent tour choreography, a new album, the big hits (cues medley), and, clearly, a love of sports. Also, like she said: It's up to them. This could still happen.

Katy Perry's segment with Espn's College GameDay on Saturday, Oct. 4 has gone viral — and not for the greatest reasons.
