The series was based on Fortean Times, a long running British periodical about "strange phenomena and experiences, curiosities, prodigies and portents", founded in 1973 and still in print as of 2018. That periodical itself is inspired by the work of Charles Fort (1874-1932), a scholar of and writer on these topics.
