According to Zack Snyder, this version contains no shots filmed by Joss Whedon from the theatrical version of Justice League.
In order to keep full creative control and ensure that the fans receive the most benefit from the director's cut, Zack Snyder declined to be paid for finishing his "Justice League".
Despite directorial credits, Zack Snyder has never actually seen the theatrical cut of Justice League (2017). Reportedly, his wife Deborah Snyder and his good friend and executive producer Christopher Nolan advised him to never see it, as it would "break his heart."
Confirmed in an interview by Deborah Snyder and Zack Snyder. The Snyder Cut only has about five minutes total of new shot added scenes with actors but there are over 2,000 new visual effects shots in the four-hour film.

Ciarán Hinds's Steppenwolf is entirely redesigned for this film as Zack Snyder intended to. Even his voice is more intimidating and distorted than his voice in Justice League (2017). According to Weta Digital's Simeon Duncombe and Anders Langlands, as the film's Animation Supervisor and Visual Effects Supervisor, they were essentially going back to Snyder's original vision with the Snyder Cut, revisiting all elements that were planned beforehand; thus, restoring the original vision rather than having to create something new. Steppenwolf's Snyder Cut look was even clearly hinted in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016).

Soon after the theatrical release of Justice League (2017), in which many fans and critics alike found the film an inaccurate representation of Zack Snyder's vision, the hashtag #ReleaseTheSnyderCut began to grow in popularity through social media in hopes of promoting a possible director's cut. Over the years since its inception, the "Release The Snyder Cut" movement has helped gain traction all the way to Warner Bros. executives and even through raising money for numerous charities associated with suicide prevention and awareness. In May 2020, after a virtual Man of Steel (2013) watch party, Snyder officially announced the project with Henry Cavill.
According to Zack Snyder, despite the film's cliffhanger ending, there won't be a sequel to elaborate the events, until Warner Bros. and/or AT&T decides otherwise.

This is not the first time Warner Bros. has released a director's cut under public pressure. In 1980, a similar issue surrounded after the release of Superman II (1980). Critics believed the film was lacking the superior tone of its predecessor. Original director Richard Donner was fired by the producers and was replaced with Richard Lester. Lester altered the film's pacing heavily and made it lighter in tone compared to the first film. Decades later in 2004, Lois Lane actress Margot Kidder said in an interview that a Richard Donner cut of Superman II exists. Following this, a fan petition started which caught the attention of Michael Thau, a film editor. He contacted Warner Bros. and proved the existence of the Donner cut. After Warner Bros. green-lit the release, Thau teamed up with Stuart Baird to reassemble the footage Donner shot during his involvement. Thau and Baird took some advice from Richard Donner himself. This marked the return of the original Superman (1978) composer John Williams by way of archived recordings. The final cut, which ran for 116 minutes (the theatrical version ran for 127 minutes), was released as Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut (2006) in November 2006, after the summer release of Superman Returns (2006).

In January 2019, Zack Snyder released a T-Shirt as a reward for people who donated proceeds to help the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The artwork design on the T-Shirt resembles the Kabbalah Tree of Life and is also said to be a cryptic map of how his intended Justice League trilogy would have played out. On the reverse side of the shirt is a quote by famed literature professor, Joseph Campbell (who wrote the Hero's Journey) saying that 'All the Gods, all the Heavens, all the Hells, are within you.'

Superman dons his iconic black suit in this definitive version of Justice League, as confirmed by footage revealed at Justice Con, an online live fan-organized zoom event on Zack Snyder and his cut of Justice League. For the 2017 theatrical cut, any scene featuring him in his black suit was supposedly digitally color-corrected to the classic blue, red and yellow. This is recently contradicted by stills and behind the scenes footage of the Snyder Cut where Henry Cavill is never seen in black suit in scenes that he should be, suggesting that while it was always intended for Superman to return in his Regeneration Suit, it was always the practical plan to have his classic suit 'fixed' in post than to come up with an identical suit but in black and silver, unlike the black suit he sported in Man of Steel (2013).

This is also evident in an extended scene of Bruce Wayne's (Ben Affleck) recruitment of Barry Allen (Ezra Miller), showing them driving past an afsp.org billboard that reads, "You are not alone." The two brawls between Steppenwolf and his Parademons and the Justice League take place in abandoned or isolated places like abandoned underground facilities or ghost towns. This was because Zack Snyder received criticism from fans that he simply doesn't care about civilian casualties during the final battle sequences, given to what happened in Man of Steel (2013) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016). So Snyder set the two face-offs between the League and Steppenwolf in two deserted places, with minimal to no civilian casualties.
