The Austin Mitchell interview with Brian Clough and Don Revie, which this film bases itself on, was in Leeds at the Calendar Studio on 13 September 1974.
The scenes in the film set at the Derby County training ground were actually filmed in Leeds at a football pitch ironically overlooking the Leeds United stadium.
According to published reports, Kenneth Branagh was considered for the role of Don Revie.
Part of this was filmed in Scarborough in Yorkshire where they pretended it was Brighton by using computer graphics to show the pier. In one scene filmed there they forgot to cover the machine to pay for parking which did not exist at that time.
Martin Compston who plays John O'Hare was actually a professional footballer in Scotland., prior to getting into acting. He made two first-team appearances in the 2001-02 season for Greenock Morton in the Scottish Second Division. In both matches he appeared as a substitute and they lost 4-0, to both Alloa Athletic and Queen of the South.
Three cast members, including Jim Broadbent, Ralph Ineson and Joe Dempsie, have all taken part in the award-winning series Game of Thrones (2011).
