Greg Davies, who played the role of Mr. Gilbert; worked as a teacher of Drama and English for thirteen years in real life. He later gave up his teaching career to become a stand-up comedian.
Matt Smith, who later became the eleventh Dr. Who auditioned for the role of Will, but lost out to Simon Bird. Iain Morris recalled - "He was brilliant - down to the last two for Will, I think. I think he was a bit too dashing! That's why he'll be brilliant in Doctor Who (2005) - he's got something sort of heroic about him. He had the humour, but what I think Simon Bird has got is a sort of vulnerability and so when he's doing these terrible rants at people, you know he's the loser! Whereas there's something very leading man and heroic about Matt Smith."
The four main characters are in their mid-to-late teens, but when the first episode was broadcast in May 2008, the actors playing them varied in age from 20 (James Buckley) to 24 years of age (Joe Thomas).
There are only two scenes over the entire series which do not feature at least one of the Inbetweeners; in Series one episode six, Mr. Gilbert is talking to himself after the school prom. And in series two episode two, Will's Mum and Neil's Dad have a meeting with Mr. Gilbert about their sons' work experience.
The fake ID that Jay uses in "First Day" to get served in the Black Bull, is a real Australian driver licence from Victoria, and the address is real too.
This is the first original sitcom created for E4. After Skins (2007), it is only the second television series created for the channel.
Dominic Cooper auditioned for the role of Will.
The car scenes were filmed with a rig on actual roads and sometimes took entire days to film.
Belinda Stuart-Wilson (Polly Mackenzie) who plays Will's mum, Polly; is only thirteen years older than Simon Bird (Will).
Before starring in "The Inbetweeners", Simon Bird and Joe Thomas attended university together, and were in a comedy sketch together at the Cambridge Footlights.
The estate where the characters live was filmed in Abbot's Langley.
The school used for external filming was Ruislip High School in London.
The Inbetweeners was E4's first UK-commissioned comedy.
Will is the only one out of the main four characters never to be seen driving. He did however, wish for driving lessons for his seventeenth birthday (which he never got because his mother thought the age limit for learning to drive was eighteen). Simon passed his driving test in "Thorpe Park", Neil passed it sometime prior to "A Night Out In London", but never bothered to tell anyone, and Jay passed his test prior to "The Fashion Show" and was seen driving his mum's red Nissan Micra to school in the same episode.

In the "Thorpe Park" episode, Neil is naked under the Mr. Monkey costume. In reality, he'd be legally required to wear clothes (usually lycras) underneath the costume.
