Richard "Rick" Castle is a millionaire playboy who recently killed off his main character when a serial killer starts killing people like he does in his books. He teams up with New York police detective Kate Beckett to solve the case. He finds inspiration in Detective Beckett and starts shadowing her for his next book.

As a tie-in, the "Nikki Heat" and "Derrick Storm" books Castle writes are published in real life. The novels are written as stand-alone stories that don't require watching the TV series, but also contain in-jokes and references to events on the show. While the books are credited to Richard Castle, the ghost-writer's identity can be found in the author's bio in the form of an eponymous award that Castle has won. See more
We see the Castle constantly ask the detectives working with him (or the detectives themselves) to put out APB's (All Points Bulletins) or BOLOs (Be On the Look Out) to bring suspects and witnesses in. When found NYPD just walk up to people and place them in the squad car, taking them to the station for the Detectives and Castle to interview even though it's pretty clear they didn't want to come. If there is no probable cause for an arrest or an active arrest warrant, the police can't make you go anywhere against your will. Once in a while, a wealthy or educated person will assert this and ask a lawyer to be present but this is rare. See more
