While Zeddicus remains engaged elsewhere, securing the box of Orden, Richard suddenly encounters home town friend Chase and helps him escape D'Haharen troops. Informed their families suffer totalitarian occupation Richard returns with him and Kahlen. They find step-brother Michael, the magistrate, presides over prayer sessions thanking Darken Rahl for repelling the rapacious attacks of Gar-dragons. Richard's first lover Anna Brighton is securing the viceroy to find out what happens to her brother. Together they discover he's among many men supposedly conscripted, in fact sacrificed to the monsters. Michael is informed and a revolt plan hatched, which doesn't work out as planned.
