Storyline

African elephant Shani and her spirited son Jomo set out on an epic journey with their herd, traveling hundreds of miles across the vast Kalahari Desert, from the Okavango delta to the Zambezi River, just as countless generations of their ancestors have done before. Shani and her family are among the last elephants on earth to make these lengthy migrations. She's mother to wide-eyed, one-year-old Jomo, who has yet to experience a migration, and at 40 years old, she is next in line as herd matriarch, a position currently held by her older sister Gaia. Gaia's herd is among countless species - from hippopotamus to lechwe to baboons - that rely upon the life-giving water that flows from the mountains and transforms the heart of the desert into a green oasis known as the Okavango delta. But the season's end is near and soon there will be a mass exodus. Nothing on Earth is more precious to life than water. And perhaps nowhere is this more apparent than the Kalahari desert in southern Africa...

Elephants are incredible
7 April 2020 | by shammaarb-47379See all my reviews

Downvoting a nature documentary due to the narrator's personal life is a bit of a slap in the face to the director, cinematographers and all the people who worked hard to bring us this incredible story and footage.

The narration was very good in my opinion. The people complaining are forgetting the target audience. The show is marketed to kids and families on Disney Plus, so the narration is more enthusiastic and playful, like she was reading a children's book. But that's the audience Disney are trying to reach so I wouldn't even bother making Attenborough comparisons.

If you like nature docs with lots of action and predators chasing prey I would recommend the last wildlife doc we watched, BBC's "The Hunt" (2015, David Attenborough). "Elephant" is slower moving but more informative and heartwarming. It follows an elephant herd's quest for survival - centering around a calf, Jomo, and his mother, Shani.

So much focus is usually put on lions, tigers and other predators, yet arguably the most intelligent of jungle/desert creatures, the elephant, doesn't get any recognition. This doc really showcased what incredible creatures they are - able to navigate thousands of miles in their lifetimes using their instincts, intelligence, memory and experience.

Overall a nice addition to Disney Plus and the kids enjoyed it, especially during the lockdown.
