A good samurai movie. It does contain the longest fighting sequence, in a single shot! Fighting does feel repetitive, but you can't compare it to anything else, cuz no one else did the same thing.
Real dedication showcased. I wish they had longer first and last scenes, and a shorter fighting sequence in between.

I appreciate a good gimmick and an indie film that tries to go big, but this was just exhausting. The reason anyone will watch Crazy Samurai Musashi is the 70 something minute long one-shot action scene that stretches from the opening title almost to the very end. Unfortunately the very same scene is the movie's biggest downfall.
I will cut this movie a lot of slack. Obviously there wasn't a big budget and they had to squeeze every penny very hard. The talent on display here is generally fantastic, especially from main actor Tak Sakaguchi whose other roles I shall immediately seek out, the scenery is used well and very plausible. The choreography is deliberately non-flashy and rather realistic which I appreciate as a pupil of japanese swordsmanship myself. The one-shot action scene however wasn't the most compelling choice to show all of this talent off.
Every passing minute it becomes increasingly apparent how the scene was done as not only individual move lists get recycled like a standard fighting animation in a videogame, but rather entire sections of choreography. There's also a lot of obvious body armor on the stunt guys. I got most of my entertainment value from guessing the next move. Someone's looking suspiciously bulky? Belly cut! Someone's wearing a very obvious big hair wig? Gee I wonder who's getting hit in the head. Then there's the same guy who always stumbles into frame, gets tripped and cut in the back while falling. The lack of extras is a very glaring flaw. Everytime someone gets killed he literally runs out of frame to re-emerge unharmed a few moments later. It was laughably ridiculous. When enemies eventually stop running out of frame and stay on the ground you know this particular segment is about to end, our hero moves on to the next level segment where clones of the exact same guys will show up a minute later, circle around him and attack one at a time with the same pattern. Rinse and repeat for 70 minutes.
Now I understand the limitations at play here but they are rather unnecessary and self-inflicted. Had this been shot in a more conventional manner it would have been no problem to shoot and edit around them entirely and make for a more compelling, even enthralling movie. For all of its gimmicky glory the one-shot is used very amateurishly too. A lot of the action is constantly obscured by extras and the camera never moves in interesting and creative ways. The opening 30 minutes of the recent super smash hit One cut of the dead (which I assume was the inspiration) showed what fun you could have with a creative one-shot action scene. This movie felt like a chore by comparison. It just goes on and on without any tension or escalation. It's still an impressive and admirable feat, but ambition alone doesn't make a good film.
To add insult to injury the film ends in a legitimately spectacular (albeit obviously sped-up) and brutal action scene, which is shot, edited and choreographed expertly. Had the entire film been like this, with mood-setting scenes leading into gritty action, this could have become a genuine modern classic, akin to what Tsukamoto tried to achieve with his recent opus Killing. Unfortunately the director wanted to show off and ruined the amazing ingredients he had.

Very cool to pull a "one shot" off, but man did it ever trade that for the things I expect in a hardcore samurai movie. Not even ONE decapitation. So sad...

Totally unrealistic.
95% of the actors who supposedly get killed either fall behind a tree/building, get concealed by a couple of other actors, or stumble out of the camera field of view. Only to reappear minutes later.
When the camera eventually pans around only 2-3 bodies are there instead of a pile of around 60+ corpses.
You end up watching the same repeated sequence over and over... one person at a time attacks, gets pommelled on the head, crawls off screen, and reappears a few minutes later.
I guess due to the lack of actors involved this was necessary, but this is child's playground fare in its execution. An army being represented by a dozen or so people constantly running around the cameraman is beyond acceptable.

This is a Japanese movie? But calling it a movie is a stretch. Also apart from a exposition dump in the first 5 minutes there is about 10 lines so not that much Japanese in it. They spend over an hour with one samurai guy taking on an endless supply of stunt guys. Poor quality you could find better quality at a medieval fair show. To be fair they do slowly walk through a model Japanese village during it. It's boring what can I say how long does it take watching Japanese men struggling out of shot after being sliced then to immediately join the endless supply of grunts. It feels like a beat them up video game without any inputs and it's stuck in an endless cutscene which never ends.

Crazy samurai Musashi doesn't able to describe the point of this one epic duel in story by Eiji Yoshikawa, the essential thing in this fight is blur, I only can see that Musashi become crazy like the title, and the most important thing is his Katana never cover by blood stains after killing more than 100 people, that is rediculous but i still appreciate their effort to make a good movie

Crazy Samurai: 400 vs. 1, also known as Crazy Samurai Musashi, is based upon writer, swordsman, strategist, ronin and philosopher Musashi Miyamoto who has inspired numerous legends. This low-budget movie shows how the titular hero confronts four hundred swordsmen when arriving to duel the disgraced Yoshioka dojo.
This movie can be separated into three scenes. The first scene is filled with atmosphere, context and tension as the members of the disgraced dojo expect the swordsman to arrive. They are planning on ambushing him but are obviously underestimating their enemy's wit.
The second scene has been filmed in one single take and lasts for seventy-seven minutes. Musashi Miyamoto confronts his enemies. They fight in a forest, on a field, in a house, in a court and later on in a small village. There are a few elements that offer some short breaks from the fight sequences such as the protagonist's brief monologues, the argument between two samurai and a peasant girl who betrays the hero.
The final scene takes place several years after the events portrayed before. It shows us what Musashi Miyamoto has become and what his foes are willing to do to murder him for once and for all.
The movie title already indicates exactly what you get here. This film is filled with fight scenes from start to finish. The stamina of lead actor Sakaguchi Taku is quite remarkable. The beautiful locations bring to life Japan in the early seventeenth century. Some of the fight scenes end up being a little bit repetitive. The visual effects look quite cheap but one gets used to them. The ending of the second scene felt a little bit unfinished in my opinion but didn't have an overall negative impact.
To keep it short, this movie is only interesting for martial arts enthusiasts and people who are interested in Japanese culture, history and legends. The movie has an unusual approach which makes it interesting to watch despite some repetition here and there. You should not expect witty dialogues, profound plot and unexpected twists here. Genre fans will get what they want and everyone else should simply ignore this film.

There is very little effort made in setting up how or why the fight happened and so as a story the plot (i.e. the central conflict) is lacking. Man v. man, yes, but without setting it up there's no real story here. I'm happy I bought it and watched it as encouraging innovation in chambara or jidai geki (definitely the former). As entertainment it lacks because it goes on long enough to spot some glaring issues easily ignored in shorter scenes. 1) the shortest distance between two points is a line. From the middle stance, one is always threatening the throat strike as the most efficient killing blow but he never does it. I get it for safety's sake but after so much coverage it becomes more obvious. 2) no one who charges from the high stance has any actual intent to connect the downward swing. You can tell because he's easily able to connect a slice to the midriff (should be a "men" attack probably) before the downswing ever happens. He does this without needing to step forward or do anything to throw off their timing. 3) no coordination from the attackers. The very few times they attack simultaneously, it's high so both blows can be blocked with the same block. The only way they could have won would be such simultaneous attacks but from different angles & directions. I take issue with those who say no blood gets on his blade because it's manifestly inaccurate. I agree with those who say that the few extras in the exact same outfits & hairpieces is something easily perceived after so many minutes of coverage.
Things that still impress me 1) the actor's physical stamina. Even if the "sword" is light wood, it has to be heavy enough to receive a lot of blows without visually bending or distorting. The actor holds that thing up an impressive length of time. We used to do an exercise in my Okinawan style where we would hold our arms parallel to the ground for as long as we could and it was never long. We just couldn't do it. 2) the preparation of the character for the battle in advance. He knows he'll need extra swords & water, so he set them up in advance. I'd like to circle back to the actor's stamina here because until close to the end he drinks very little of the water, preferring to rinse his mouth & his "blade." He's obviously sweating for real & doing a lot off physical activity so again, impressive. 3) the fight scene at the end.
The last bit of criticism I have wasn't mentioned yet, and that is not letting us see the last opponent defeated. After making us sit through all that attacking without even giving us the emotional satisfaction of completion felt like a deliberate waste of our time. If they were going to cut away, why not edit? Why not show the ending after spending so much time setting it up.

Great idea. Was very excited to watch it. Disappointing in every aspect. No gore. Horrible choreography. Absolutely too long. Was bored out of my mind within the first 15 minutes.

Crazy Samurai Musashi is an experience not a movie. If you rate it like a movie you probably would find it just repetitive and not spectacular. What are you expectations? John Wick with a sword? No this is not it even if the corpse count is comparable. A Zatoichi movie? Kill Bill? No. After the first ten minutes you start being on the shoulder of Mushashi, understanding that every stroke of the sword is a duel per se, that the repetitive task of battling is life, that Musashi faced up with a grimace, ready to live or die but at its own pace, with its own rules. You see that he planned this journey and at the same time is ready to face the unknown, He's human, tired, but a war machine. He's THE samurai. Crazy Samurai Musashi.
Not for every taste, but a Masterpiece.

Tak Sakaguchi plays Miyamoto Musashi, Japan's most renowned swordsman, writer of "The Book of Five Rings". Musashi would travel around Japan challenging different schools of swordsmanship. Naturally, this Samurai would have many enemies seeking vengeance.
Like many of the old Samurai films, the samurai hero would fight against a challenging opponent, but eventually it got ridiculous and the hero would fight whole armies of swordsmen, all at once. However, the swordsmen would still come at him one at a time. This is no different in this film.
You would think that Musashi would be tripping over bloody corpses and severed heads The quick shots of blood is crated digitally and the wounded opponents politely stagger out of the scene. They needed to keep this PG-14. One thing about "Crazy Samurai" is that they gave the illusion of a single take which was kind of cool (ala Hitchcock's "Rope"), especially with a hand-held camera. It does have the effect of playing a first-person shooter game, following the protagonist to other scenes where other fighters are. Musashi even stops at various locations to drink, eat, and pick up newer swords. Was this taken from the PS5 game "Ghost of Tsushima", or perhaps from a Japanese game that we don't see here in the States.
This continuous shot is a nice gimmick but it might not be the kind of movie you need to see a second time.

Miyamoto Musashi was a very interesting Japanese Ronin in Japan's era's of swordsmen and Samurai history. Throw in Tak Sakguchi playing Musashi and I was all set for an amazing action film. How wrong I was!
It dragged on and on with poor fight choreography and too few extras playing his enemies (it became very apparent, after 10 minutes, that the same dead guys were coming back time and time again). There were no exiting moments, no edge of your seat grippers but, there were many sword style errors; which in real life he would have been killed.
Overall i think it was poorly conceived, directed and acted with terrible choreography.

This movie took sloppy and unoriginal to another level. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to watch this. You will probably be more entertained watching the RPG people at the parks. I wish I was exaggerating but I am not. I would like to give them credit for originality or any attempt made to do something special. I was excited to see this movie and waited for almost a year for it to come out on a channel, and I was less let down by the new VHS movie. There are so many other movies to invest your time in. I am telling everyone now, it would be a bad investment to put it into watching this movie.

Okay the lead actor obviously knows how to use a sword. But my god is this endless fight boring and sooooo not realistic. So many enemys, they dont even try to surround him and they all attack one by one? how stupid is that. Its always funny to "buys" enemys in 2nd line waiting for their turn.

First 10 minutes and last 5 minutes was really good.
The whole middle sucked and should have been a YouTube video.
Just because you can make the "longest" one take fight scene doesn't mean you should because there is a strong chance it's not going to look or be good.

Personally I enjoyed the movie, but to review this or recommend the movie, I would not.
I had no idea Tak was the leading actor, and I knew it would not disappoint. Though it let me down.
The opening of the movie felt like a real movie, the camera, cinematography, colour grading, blurring etc. As soon as someone gets killed and Musashi reveals himself, then the quality all of a sudden drops.
I was shocked that the movie did the action one take with no cuts, effects or cgi. However it got repetitive, which was the movie's downfall. Same moves, same attacks, same sequences. I can understand it would be hard to find 400 actors and 400 actors who can remember the choreography and cut time, so it's fine for me if the same actors where repeating.
The movie had little story, which was a downfall, we have no idea why Musashi is killing the clans or why they want to kill him (because he killed someone Sejuiro). The effects of the movie are actually quite good, blood is not over exaggerated, but believeable.

The entire 90 whatever minutes is filmed in a single take. That's a pretty impressive achievement, but the entire movie is a repetition of about 7 - 8 different kill moves and it gets really boring after a while.
Crazy Samurai Musashi kills something like a billion people in the movie and there's not an ounce of blood on the ground, or his clothes.

This is quite a unique film. I really like the idea of having one continuous shot in a 1 vs 400 samurai battle. There were some issues though. The fighters that fall in battle all seem to be able to walk or stumble away out of frame. You can see them running off I. The background to circle back and join the fight again. I'm sure this was because they didn't get enough people to have them all "die once". It's also very obvious that they don't really ever surround him because the camera is usually very close behind the 1 samurai. All the blood is mostly digital so the samurai's sword never even has blood on it til much later and it's not much. There is also an nice break in the battle for a costume change. Again, very obvious. Now I do commend the director for trying this and with more people and a bigger budget this style could really be amazing for those who like these kind of movies. Amazing effort put in this film by the actors. The lack of realism just took this down quite a bit for me.

Since this movie consists of one non-stop action sequence, I thought that it would at least be fun to watch -- it was not. There is a brief, professionally filmed, multi-shot opening, which hinted at this being a possibly interesting film. After the opening credit, there was a jarring change in scene, lighting and camera, and the remainder of the film was shot by a hand-held camera in footage which looked more appropriate on YouTube. The fighting wasn't even realistic: the hero, Musashi, would basically just tap an opponent with his sword, and the opponent would fall down, roll out of the way, and run to the back of the army to try again -- you could actually see the "dead" fighters roll out of shot and run to the back of the army. For all the people "slain" there weren't even any dead bodies on the ground. In all fairness, I was only able to sit through about fifteen minutes of this before I had to turn it off. Possibly it got better, but I doubt it. I'm not saying filming a 77 minute fight scene wasn't impressive, it just wasn't interesting. I'm not a Martial Arts enthusiast, maybe if you were you would get more out of this film. To me, it was just a bunch of guys very formally hitting each other with sticks. For better fight scenes, watch virtually any other Martial Arts movie.

Counter attack/parry/parry/parry that's what its doing the whole movie i thought it was cool since iv'e seen TAK part of it but its a bait you can finish this i 5 min just making it fast forward because it has to story waste of time

This is one of the absolute worst movies I've ever seen in my entire life. Do you want to be hopelessly bored out of your mind for 91 minutes? If so, this is the movie for you. Watching this felt like running a marathon, as it was physically exhausting to get through. It was honestly a grueling experience to try to stay awake. The entire movie is the exact same fight sequence repeated endlessly over and over and over and over again, with very little gore or anything even remotely interesting at all. Speaking of which, the "fight" scenes are very similar to what you would see at Renaissance fairs. This honestly felt like a 2011 YouTube video on a higher budget. I've seen Smosh videos better than this, because at least they don't run for an entire hour and a half. Which by the way, it's an hour and a half, but it feels like nine hours, because you're struggling to sit through it and just begging that the end will arrive. I would legitimately rather watch paint dry then watch any of this ever again.

Right for the onset it was bad!. Almost no decent camera angles, the choreography was just terrible.
So called samurai just running at him with their swords in the air only to be predictably sliced in the gut.
The more and more it went on the worse it got with head hits on anyone with a lot of hair and samurai running back and forth in the background. I think there was only couple samurai that looked like they'd held a sword with most stood posturing. In most sword action films there's at least some attempt at making it look real, this effort fail miserably. Even the main character holds a sword wrong.
