Ke Huy Quan turns Jackie Chan in the action comedy Love Hurts, from producer David Leitch (John Wick), whose production company 87North also made Nobody and Violent Night. Admittedly, the film has its fair share of problems, but Quan’s likeability and some decent fight scenes paper over a lot of the flaws.
Recent Oscar-winner Quan plays mild-mannered estate agent Marvin Gable, who, just like mild-mannered Bob Odenkirk in Nobody, turns out to have a secret violent past, in this case as a deadly killer, working for his gangster brother Knuckles (Daniel Wu). Marvin walked away from that life after Knuckles ordered him to kill Rose (recent Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose), the woman he loved, whereupon he faked her death,...

Ke Huy Quan may have been in the entertainment industry for over 40 years since making his memorable debut as a child actor in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The Goonies in the following year. His acting career didn’t take off as expected, leading him to shift into working behind the scenes, notably as a stunt choreographer in X-Men and The One.
Then along came the eventual Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once, which marked his significant return to acting, and the rest, as they say, is history. Fortune certainly favors the bold, for such persons as Ke Huy Quan, whose acting comeback finally granted him with a rare leading role in Love Hurts.
Made under the 87North Productions banner with David Leitch serving as one of the co-producers, the movie allows Quan to flex his acting muscles and martial arts skills, showcasing the 53-year-old actor’s...

The poster for Love Hurts shows a menacing-looking Ke Huy Quan staring directly into the camera, wearing a cute, heart-emblazoned sweater as Valentine’s Day candies swirl around him. It’s a perfect encapsulation of the dichotomies of this new effort from 87North, the production company that specializes in action films featuring such unlikely stars as Bob Odenkirk (Nobody) and David Harbour (playing a kickass Santa Claus in Violent Night).
Unfortunately, the company doesn’t fare as well with the Oscar-winning actor from Everything Everywhere All at Once. For all his impressive fighting skills, Quan simply doesn’t look very tough, even when outfitted with slicked-back hair and a mustache in the flashbacks. Lovable, yes; a badass, no.

Fans of David Harbour might be in for a treat as hints about ‘Violent Night 2’ begin to surface.
According to Cinema Blend, the writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller recently discussed the new directions the sequel might take.
While promoting their work on ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3,’ they couldn’t help but dive into details about the much-anticipated follow-up to the 2022 hit, ‘Violent Night.’
The writers shared that the sequel would maintain the spirit of the original but draw fresh inspiration from Westerns.
Josh Miller explained, “It’s not going to be a Western, but expect some story elements and themes typical of the genre.”
This suggests an intriguing blend of action and classic Western showdowns, wrapped in festive mayhem.
Adding to the excitement, Pat Casey promised more of what made the first movie a success: more violence paired with an ample dose of Christmas cheer.

Violent Night 2 co-writer Josh Miller addresses the potential appearance of Mrs. Claus. The 2022 action comedy followed David Harbour as an embittered and discouraged Santa Claus, who stumbles upon the Lightstone family being held hostage on Christmas Eve. Praised by audiences and considered a relative commercial success, having generated $76 million worldwide, a sequel to the holiday film was announced in 2023. Details about Violent Night 2 remain scarce, but Miller and Pat Casey are working on the script, and ideas for incorporating Mrs. Claus and other elements have been swirling.
During a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Miller discussed the possibility of Mrs. Claus being played by Winona Ryder in Violent Night 2. Two years ago, Universal Pictures teamed with producers David Leitch and Kelly McCormick of 87North Productions and director Tommy Wirkola to bring us the highly entertaining, R-rated holiday thriller Violent Night (read our 8/10 review at This Link)… and now, Violent Night 2 appears to be heading toward production. Star David Harbour was spotted with the script in his hand earlier this month, and during an interview with Collider, screenwriters Patrick Casey and Josh Miller assured that they know what fans are hoping to see in the sequel.
While Casey and Miller have stayed busy in recent years by writing each film in the Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy, they have taken the occasional break from scripting Sonic action to write about Santa Claus taking on bad guys. Violent Night showed what happens when a team of elite mercenaries breaks into a wealthy family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone inside hostage.

With the first movie having offered glimpses of a new take on the holiday icon, writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller tease how Violent Night 2 will expand on their Santa Claus mythology. The 2022 action-comedy starred David Harbour as Santa, disillusioned by increasingly greedy children and now often drunk, as he finds himself trapped in a mansion as a group of mercenaries takes a rich family hostage, requiring him to step up and fight. Produced by John Wick alum David Leitch, development on Violent Night 2 has swirled for the past two years, gaining steam in the past few months.

After a modest box office opening and relatively positive critical response for Violent Night, it has been confirmed that a sequel, Violent Night 2 is on the way. Directed by Tommy Wirkola, the pulpy low-budget David Harbour project sees a band of mercenaries battle with Santa Claus (Harbour), when they take a wealthy family hostage. With its tongue-in-cheek action and abundant references to previous Christmas movies, Violent Night delivered an entirely new experience that still packed in a lot of holiday fun.
From a narrative perspective, the relatively self-contained story of Violent Night gives the sequel plenty of creative wiggle room. Given that David Harbour's Santa Claus was resurrected and survived the blood-soaked dénouement, the holiday anti-hero will be back in action, though he might be the only one returning. The first movie killed off many of its main characters, which necessitates a fresh start in the sequel. Thanks to...

Violent Night 2 gets an exciting script update from its writers, two years after the John Wick producer's Santa action-comedy was released. Volent Night 2's release was confirmed in January 2023, not long after the first movie became a theatrical success. ’Twas the weekend before Christmas… With the holiday season upon us, many of us are starting to revisit some of our of Christmas favourites. I actually went to see a 4K re-release of the original Black Christmas last night here in Montreal. There’s something comforting upon returning to our old favourites every year, whether they be traditional Christmas classics, or perhaps something a little more modern, like Die Hard, which, despite many claiming otherwise, has totally established itself as a Christmas classic over the years.
Whatever the case, there are certainly Loads of Christmas movies, with everything from old-time classics like It’s A Wonderful Life or some of the many versions of A Christmas Carol (the Alistair Sim version is the best Imo), or something like Love Actually, which is virtually inescapable at this time of the year.

Santa Claus won’t be the only thing coming down the chimney this Christmas Eve, as director Justin Kurzel’s FBI thriller The Order comes to On Demand. In the film, a string of violent robberies in the Pacific Northwest leads a veteran FBI agent into a domestic terrorist plot to overthrow the federal government. Nothing says Christmas like violence and corruption! Who’s bringing the spiked eggnog?
Here’s the official synopsis for The Order:
“For over a year, a series of bold daylight bank robberies and armored car heists leaves law enforcement baffled and the public panicked throughout the Pacific Northwest. As the attacks become increasingly violent, FBI agent Terry Husk (Jude Law) becomes convinced that the robberies are the work of a domestic terrorist gang that plans to use the loot to finance an armed uprising against the U.S. government.

After Stranger Things season 5 determines the fate of Hawkins, two of its stars - David Harbour and Winona Ryder - could have an exciting reunion in a sequel to Violent Night. Stranger Things' fifth season will premiere with plenty of buzz, due in part to Joyce and Hopper’s relationship becoming official in the latest series. Season 5 is one of the most anticipated projects of 2025, meaning Stranger Things has huge expectations ahead. The upcoming teaser has fans worrying about Hopper’s fate, but closing the door on Hawkins’ chief of police means Harbour can take center stage with his unorthodox Santa.
Violent Night premiered with positive responses after a relatively modest box office opening, meaning there is plenty of flexibility for future installments. Harbour’s performance leaves nothing to be desired, and his involvement was crucial for taking the project off the ground. Director Tommy Wirkola was confident that Harbour's...

There might be a bucket full of comedies and Christmas movies out there that have become a holiday staple for audiences. But over the years, nothing could compete with National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Born on the night of December 1, 1989, the movie saw its national debut and quickly became a new holiday favorite for fans.

But now, it has been 35 years since its release. And a lot can change within that span of time—careers grow and fall, people retire and some even tragically pass away. So let’s check out where the cast of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is now.

The image of Santa Claus has been curated over the years to become wholesome and a symbol of happiness. In the past, he had been seen as a representation of Saint Nicholas or Father Christmas. In the 80s, he seemed to take a darker turn as horror filmmakers decided to use his visage to corrupt the viewer’s expectations. This sweet and gentle man would now be a killer. Multiple films decided to use this idea, and a whole sub-genre of horror Christmas movies was born. Which ones are the best killer Santa movies?
Violent Night (2022)
Most killer Santa Clauses are villains, but this newer movie had the jolly man fighting for the side of good. This little twist makes the film even more fun. A wealthy family is held hostage, and it turns out their only hope is the fat man himself. David Harbour plays the legendary figure who...

Two years ago, Universal Pictures teamed with producers David Leitch and Kelly McCormick of 87North Productions and director Tommy Wirkola to bring us the highly entertaining, R-rated holiday thriller Violent Night (read our 8/10 review at This Link)… and now, star David Harbour is celebrating the holidays with the script for Violent Night 2 in hand!
Harbour, who played Santa Claus in Violent Night, shared a picture on social media that showed him hanging out with Santa… and, yes, holding the Violent Night 2 script.

‘Violent Night’ is a 2022 Christmas action comedy where Santa Claus, played by David Harbour, battles mercenaries who take a wealthy family hostage. The film also stars John Leguizamo, Alex Hassell, and Beverly D’Angelo.
For a few years now, there’s been talk about the sequel. Back in 2022, David Harbour mentioned ideas for a sequel to ‘Violent Night,’ including the possibility of introducing Mrs. Claus, suggesting Charlize Theron for the role. Director Tommy Wirkola also discussed exploring Mrs. Claus, the North Pole, and elves in the story, noting the sequel’s chances relied on the first film’s success.
By December, producer Kelly McCormick confirmed plans for a sequel were moving forward. In January 2023, it was officially announced that the sequel was in development. Harbour later shared in March 2024 that filming might start in early 2025, depending on schedules.

Santa Claus is back on the rampage next year, with David Harbour set to return for Violent Night 2. More here.
You may, at this time of year, be working your way through dozens of sweet Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel, which all seem to involve some manufactured conflict, and perhaps even a smooch at the end. Or you may reach the other way, and call on David Harbour when it’s all getting a bit too much. As Santa Claus in festive action fest Violent Night, he wasn’t very Hallmark-y. He’s actually really rather violent. A solid success on release, plans were swiftly afoot for Violent Night 2.
Those plans, we now learn, are accelerating. Tommy Wirkola, who directed the first film, is confirmed to be back for the second as well. Pat Casey and Josh Miller are said to be on scripting duties, but things...

While a sequel to Tommy Wirkola’s action-thriller Violent Night was confirmed almost two years ago, updates have been scarce. That’s likely about to change. David Harbour delivered a holiday treat on Instagram that seems to confirm that Violent Night 2 is gearing up to shoot next year.
Harbour posted a picture with Santa Claus and a caption that reads, “Merry Xmas, ya filthy animals.” But it’s what’s in his hand that’s most intriguing: the script for Violent Night 2.
In Violent Night, “A team of elite mercenaries breaks into a wealthy family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone inside hostage. But the team isn’t prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus (Harbour) is on the grounds, and he’s about to show why this Nick is no saint.”
Last we heard, Pat Casey and Josh Miller will be back to write Violent Night 2.

After movies like Violent Night, Fat Man and the recent Red One, you’d think Santa movies with an action twist had reached their limit. However, the action icon, Arnold Schwarzenegger, now suits up to play Kris Kringle for the comedy The Man With the Bag, which also stars Alan Ritchson. The concept is similar to Red One, except this time, Santa loses his bag of presents and enlists a former thief to get it back. Adam Shankman directs The Man With The Bag from a script by Allan Rice. The holiday-themed project hails from Amazon MGM Studios.
The former Terminator has posted a photo for this holiday that features him donning some Christmas-y threads from the set of the film. Arnold posts on his Instagram, “Santa Claus is coming to town! It is fantastic to be shooting The Man with the Bag with @alanritchson. Our director @adamshankman is one...

Brought by John Wick producer David Leitch, the sequel to a 2022 Santa Claus action comedy is still in development, according to its lead star. Leitch first found success in the industry in the world of stunts, first as a performer, then as a coordinator, frequently working with Keanu Reeves, including in the Matrix trilogy. He would then go on to make his directorial debut on the original John Wick movie alongside fellow stunt veteran Chad Stahelski, before making his solo directorial debut with the Charlize Theron-led Atomic Blonde.
While Stahelski would direct the remaining four sequels by himself, Leitch executive produced all three of the John Wick sequels. Besides the Keanu Reeves-led franchise, the producer and filmmaker was also behind several successful movies, including Bullet Train, The Fall Guy, Nobody, and Deadpool 2, all of which were praised for their blends of tension, thrill, action and comedy, including a...

More than any other holiday, the Christmas season comes fully equipped with movies that you might end up watching whether you want to or not. Holiday marathons set up camp on several TV channels for most of December, and if your Christmas-celebrating family isn't throwing on a virtual yule log during group celebrations, there's a good chance they've got "Home Alone" or "A Christmas Story" on in the background of festivities. Plenty of Christmas movies aren't actually that great, but they have a way of needling their way into the fabric of the holiday season and becoming part of an unshakeable tradition. Others are true masterpieces, capable of catching us off guard and cracking open our hearts.
It's worth noting that some of the best on-screen Christmas stories ever made don't make the cut here because they don't actually reach feature film length. Classics like 1965's "A Charlie Brown Christmas,...

The raunchy R-rated comedy Bad Santa, was a sleeper hit at the 2003 Christmas box office, and even spawned a 2016 sequel, so why isn't Bad Santa 3 happening? When it hit theaters over 20 years ago, Bad Santa was a big middle finger to the sweet holiday movies that celebrated the spirit of Christmas. Whereas 2003 also saw the release of Elf, a family-friendly Christmas movie starring Will Ferrell as the wholesome, optimistic Buddy, Billy Bob Thornton's Willie T. Stokes was a foul-mouthed, hard-drinking mall Santa. It was the actor in his peak scoundrel era.
It turns out that Thornton's sleazy Santa was the perfect gift for audiences, and Bad Santa went on to gross over $76 million at the worldwide box office (via Box Office Mojo). This led to a sequel, and though it took 13 years, 2016 saw the release of Bad Santa 2. In this installment, Thornton's Willie reteams with his partner in crime,...

In 2021, Tommy Wirkola delivered a delightfully deranged and bloody comedic thriller in The Trip. Now, Variety reports that a remake is in the works with an impressive cast lined up.
Jason Segel, Samara Weaving, Timothy Olyphant, and Juliette Lewis are set to star in The Trip, directed by Lonely Island member Jorma Taccone (Pop Star: Never Stop Stopping).
In The Trip, “a dysfunctional couple (Segel and Weaving) who head to a remote cabin to supposedly reconnect, but each has secret plans to kill the other.” What the logline leaves out is that the couple’s plans to commit murder get derailed by the arrival of actual killers, and violent mayhem ensues.
Paul Guilfoyle (LA Confidential) and former UFC star Keith Jardine (Inherent Vice) have also joined the cast, likely rounding out the murderers that converge in The Trip.
Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney adapt Wirkola’s script. Taccone and Tommy Wirkola are executive producers,...

Plot: When Santa Claus (J.K. Simmons) is kidnapped from the North Pole on the day before Christmas, his head of security, Callum Drift (Dwayne Johnson), must team with an untrustworthy tracker (Chris Evans) to find him and save both Christmas and the world!
Review: Red One is the very definition of a streaming movie. While it’s getting a theatrical release, it seems tailor-made as a movie meant to please the algorithm and audiences looking for an easily digestible family action film they can break up in pieces. Despite running only two hours, it’s striking similar in structure to Dwayne Johnson’s Netflix hit, Red Notice, in that it’s little more than a series of generic action set pieces strung together and designed as “world-building” in the hopes, I suppose, that this will turn out to be a perennial hit for Prime Video. It hits theatres this week,...

The expensive price tag on Dwayne Johnson’s Red One came out to over $200 million, which is actually not unusual for the superstar’s mega-budget movies. Deadline is reporting that the Christmas adventure movie is on track to see a $35 million opening this weekend as the early Thursday night previews totaled in at $3.7 million. Our own Chris Bumbray was not impressed with the film as he said in his review, “Red One is the very definition of a streaming movie. While it’s getting a theatrical release, it seems tailor-made as a movie meant to please the algorithm and audiences looking for an easily digestible family action film they can break up in pieces.”
Deadline also made sure to note that this figure also includes money made from a Sunday special screening. The Santa rescue caper has been sitting still on tracking for a good amount time with a $30 million to a $35 million projection.
