Trivia

Originally, a British family was to be featured on the show and Seth MacFarlane would have done the voice of the father, but the writers felt there wouldn't be enough British jokes, so the family was dropped in favor of Holt. See more »

Why so negative?
1 March 2010 | by See all my reviews

Before deciding to look at this I decided to look at all the reviews for it and I was surprised such a high amount were negative. I didn't really understand them, its not perfect but there are some positives that make it in my view anyway better than the more recent episodes of Family Guy. Family Guy in its most recent seasons has in my view grown stale with general forced offensive and pop culture gags. Originally having an appeal to them now it has become a case of 'yeah we get it, religious jokes and movies from the 80's you can't just dump them on screen and expect them to be funny. Feeling this way about Family Guy I actually had a small degree of optimism as I was hoping for improvement in this department. When I finally did start watching it I thought it was reasonably funny with decent potential. A few episodes in now and I haven't changed my stance but I am happy with it. There seems to be more effort with this than recent episodes of Family Guy and I have appreciated it. The jokes do not feel as forced as I was expecting and the characters were quite likable even though I was expecting some irritating ones. There seems to be more effort displayed now and I personally do not feel a huge amount of gags just thrusted upon me. The character of Cleveland is well worthy of his own show and shows why he probably would have been wasted still on Family Guy. In summary it is by all means not perfect but has potential and if it doesn't succumb to the mindless 'in your face' gags that it could easily escalate to then it could be fairly enjoyable. That said it could be improved but give it time and you may enjoy, that is what I am holding out for.
