Armed with a license to kill, Secret Agent James Bond sets out on his first mission as 007, and must defeat a private banker to terrorists in a high stakes game of poker at Casino Royale, Montenegro, but things are not what they seem.
The events in this movie take place around the same time as the events in The Bourne Ultimatum (2007). When a British reporter was writing an expose about Black Ops operations Treadstone and Black Briar, and the ones responsible for them are concerned. And when Jason Bourne, former Treadstone operative got the file on Treadstone and Black Briar and gave it to Pamela Landy who then passed it to the media. When the men behind Treadstone and Black Briar learn of this, they're concerned how this will affect other ops they have. They decide it's best to shut down all ops and make sure make everyone involved disappears. They try to take out Aaron Cross who is part of another op called Outcome, but he manages to survive. He then seeks out Dr. Marta Shearing who worked on him when he began. It seems part of the program is for all subjects to take medications but he has run out, which is why he seeks her. But someone tries to kill her. He saves her and she tells him, he should have stopped ...Written by
The film was edited by John Gilroy, Tony Gilroy's brother who, with their other brother, Dan, co-wrote the screenplay to this film and Tony co-produced and directed this film. This is the third film that he has edited for Tony Gilroy with the others being Michael Clayton (2007), Duplicity (2004), and this one. He would also edit, Nightcrawler (2014), which was written and directed by Dan Gilroy and produced by Tony Gilroy. See more »
There are no nonstop flights from the Eastern United States to Manila in the Philippines. If the CIA was intent on stopping Cross and Dr. Shearing and knew they were on a flight to the country, they could have had the plane stopped in Los Angeles or any of the overseas refueling/departure points before it arrived. Additionally , there would have been significant layovers from when the plane departed from the other airports meaning that unless the CIA didn't figure their destination before they arrived, they would have been detained and captured INSIDE the United States. The Bourne Legacy in no way resembles the book. That probably doesn't matter because the Bourne films and the books have been diverging for years.
Matt Damon's Jason Bourne isn't the lead. That's no spoiler..anyone who has seen posters or trailers knows that. Jeremy Renner ( Hurt Locker, the Town) is the new hero Aaron Cross. Renner is a good actor and he quickly eclipses all memories of Bourne and makes the role his own.
Rachel Weiosz is the female lead and its the first time that the hero in this series has had a female co-star who makes an impression and has a fan base of her own. Both actors are excellent. The relationship between them works on many levels and Rachel's character is an important element of the story. Bourne's female leads were either an encumberance to him to be cast aside ( Marie) or a tacked on love interest to provide a trailer moment (Stiles).
The action is handled better, not that its better staged - the action in this series has always been first rate- but now that Greengrass has gone its less frenetic in its editing so you can see what is going on.
All the cast are convincing and the good news is that a sequel has already been greenlit so we'll see these characters again.
