Descrizione

  • Fiji is recording a video for her most recent pop song. The director tells her to imagine that she's an octopus about to feed on her prey from above. After the filming wraps up, everyone applauds Fiji and she sits down at her makeup table, putting an antique coin down on the tabletop. A reporter thanks the singer for letting her follow her around and says the article she's working on will be out the next day, and Fiji says that what she is going to do next is going to be a big hit.

Fiji's car arrives, and she goes outside after picking up the coin. As Fiji walks to her car, she hears a busker, Jasmine Delancey, playing, and says that it's a nice song. Jasmine recognizes Fiji and says that she loves her music. Fiji asks Jasmine what she wants with her performing, and Jasmine says that she wants what Fiji has. The singer gives the coin to Jasmine, and two fans run over and gush over Fiji. More people join in and Fiji walks off. Fiji waves to Jasmine, then steps off the curb directly into the path of a speeding bus. People scream, and Jasmine looks at the coin in her hands.

Jasmine returns home and hears her sister Zara talking to their father about how Jasmine spends all day singing on the street, begging for change like a bum. Slapping down her keys so that Zara can hear her, Jasmine turns and goes up to her room. Writing down song lyrics, Jasmine looks at the coin Fiji gave her.

Later, Jasmine goes back to the street, puts the sheet with the lyrics on Fiji's shrine, and starts playing her guitar. The Fiji fans gathered at the shrine notice and applaud Jasmine, cheering her, and Jasmine smiles and basks in the applause she's always sought.

Soon Jasmine is collecting money from people listening to her play as she performs on the street. J.J. Malloy, the host of the show "Ovation", comes up and compliments Jasmine. He says that he can make Jasmine a star, and soon at home Jasmine tells Zara about how Malloy wanted her on "Ovation" and she's going to try out the next day. Zara says that she can't make it because she has thoracic surgery scheduled and can't find a replacement, and Zara jokingly says that when Jasmine makes it to the finals, she can finally start paying Zara rent. Jasmine says that she'll buy Zara a car, hugs her, and walks off.

The next day at the "Ovation" studio, the other auditioners are dismissed. Malloy presents Jasmine, and she gets a round of applause from the studio audience before she finishes playing, and Malloy joins in. The host says that it was fantastic.

Jasmine's career starts and she films biographical sessions for the show. She goes out jogging with Zara, and everyone recognizes her and says they're fans. One time Tara finds Jasmine putting on an expensive dance, and tells her that she should just look like herself. Jasmine irritably tells her that she is herself, and her sister says that she should just wear something that makes her feel comfortable. The younger woman says that she's in front of an audience and not trying to look comfortable, and Zara wouldn't understand because she's "just" a doctor. Tara takes offense, saying that she saves lives, and Jasmine says that she saves lives by singing from her soul. They argue and Tara tells her that at some point Jasmine will have to come down to earth and figure out her life. Tara says that Jasmine has nothing for her to be jealous of because she's broke, and Tara tells her that she doesn't have to come, and angrily says that it's for the best.

That night on "Ovation", Malloy says that they'll make one of three contestants a star. Jasmine performs and everyone applauds even though she fumbles playing the song. Even her father applauds, and is in the audience. The applausemeter blows out, and Malloy declares Jasmine the winner.

The next morning, Jasmine is woken up by dozens of calls on her phone. There are fans outside cheering and applauding, Jasmine looks at the coin Fiji gave her, then looks out again at her fans and wonders if the coin is connected to her sudden popularity. Tara serves Jasmine breakfast and says that it's a peace offering for missing Jasmine's performance. Jasmine says that she was awful and yet people applauded, and tells Tara about the coin. She wonders if it's something in the coin that is making the attention happen, and Tara says that it make sense Tara jokingly takes the coin, and Jasmine yanks it back and her older sister tells her that people like her and that's why they're clapping.

Later, Jasmine goes out and sees her name on bus sides, advertising her new release. People see Jasmine on the street and say that they love her, run up, and hug her. Fans continue to gather outside the Delancey house, and Jasmine finally goes out and yells at them to go home. They don't, and people approach Jasmine as she and Zara jog. The sisters finally hide to avoid Jasmine's fans, and Jasmine tells Tara that it's the coin. Tara advises her to get rid of the coin, but Jasmine doesn't want to go back to singing on the street.

Later, Jasmine goes on a talk show hosted by Jimmy O'Malley. Everyone wildly applauds her, and Jasmine says that she wouldn't be there without Fiji. The audience keeps applauding, and O'Malley invites Jasmine to sing a song. Jasmine finally gives in but everyone still applauds her and she walks off stage and gets into her SUV. Even her driver applauds her, taking his hands off the wheel and the SUV swerves through the traffic. Jasmine finally grabs the wheel and pulls the SUV out, and she gets out and runs away.

Jasmine goes to the hospital where Tara works and finds her sister in the operating room. Her song is playing on a radio, and the doctors see Jasmine and applaud, and even the patient they're operating on applauds. Tara is in the next room washing up and sees what happens, and Jasmine finds her sister and tells her that the coin's effect is out of control.

Later, Jasmine and Tara go outside and Jasmine gives the coin to her sister. Tara assures Jasmine that she'll always be her, and Tara finally takes the coin and tells Jasmine to go to the family lake house. Jasmine does so and settles into a comfortable life away from everyone, meditating and eating ramen noodles.

One day Jasmine checks the mail and finds a magazine with an article asking what happened to her. She reads it and drinks, and then she plays her guitar for herself. Another day she gets an entertainment magazine and finds a story about a new singer, Mynx, whose star is rising. There's no picture of Mynx, and Jasmine reads the article, and laughs and applauds.

Jasmine continues playing on the dock at the lake, then sings in anger. She dreams of the applause she got, She finally pack a bag, including a hunting knife from the cabin, goes into the city, and plays on the street. People passing mock her singing voice, and when she spots Malloy and approaches her, he doesn't recognize her. He figures she's a street person and runs off. There's a sign for Mynx on the side of a passing bus.

Tracking Mynx down to a reception the singer is attending, Jasmine makes her way through the crowd of applauding fans and sees the singer signing autographs. Drawing the hunting knife, Jasmine stabs Mynx... and realizes that it's Tara, wearing a wig. Tara dies, releasing her grip on the coin, and the fans applaud her as she dies.
