This movie dates from 1980, in the post-sixties era when a libertine sexuality was cheered at, and just before the rise of AIDS. The purpose of filmmaker Savel was (as I understand it) to make a visually artistic movie that celebrates the male body and gay sex, in an uncensored and totally unrestrained way. He more or less succeeded. What we see is basically a gay porn movie: there is no (discernible) narrative, there is hardly any substantial dialogue, the actors are all young, angelically attractive with smooth bodies, and all action in all scenes concerns nothing else but sex (solitary, couples, groups, in bedrooms, toilets, locker rooms, or out in the open), everything pictured extremely graphical. What lifts it (slightly) above the level of common porn, is the at times beautiful photography, and the choreography of the actors, who mostly move as in slow motion.
I would lie if I said that I didn't like looking at all this, and sure, at times I was enchanted by the almost dreamy atmosphere that gave some of the various sexual acts a surprising visual beauty. But to be honest: the feeling that prevailed after 90 minutes still was that I had watched a porn movie. Okay, an arty one, but still a porn movie. Now I would hate to be mistaken for a prude or a bigot, and I have no objection whatsoever against porn, but why this dressing up of porn as arthouse?! Who do you serve with this? The one that expects porn will be irritated by the slowness and the arty mannerisms, while the one that expects an arthouse film will be turned-off by all the graphic in-your-face sex. I would say: either make a serious movie with some kind of story, and with - if needed - whatever amount of sex that at least has to be functional to the narrative; or stick to regular porn.
