We saw an industry screening last night at Dendy in Sydney, and it was the best movie I've seen in this genre in years. It's mainly a drama, with an epic love story, spiced up with funny bits throughout. Cried my eyes out a few times, mainly with joy and relief.
I'm pretty sure it's an "indie" film, so I didn't expect it to be so fast paced and engaging. But it hit the ground running and races through the plot progression at an exciting pace, which is never hectic. It gets you invested in all the characters, all of which are very complex yet easily relatable and likable despite their demons.
I just can't believe how real it was. The three leads are incredibly real!! Where the hell did these actors come from? The writing and directing was world class, keeping me on my toes. It's visually and emotionally beautiful, breathtaking, stunning. There were many times that the writing could have wrapped up a scene and I'd be satisfied, but then it then it goes up a notch. And another notch. And another. This writer/director is a rare talent.
Themes include addiction, abuse, yearning, dysfunctional family bonds, seeking solace, and different people ways of pursuing peace love and happiness. I'm trying so hard not to give details!
