Hurricane Michael caused many issues for principal photography, such as water damage to the storyboards and props, as well as destruction to multiple early shooting locations.
The waterfall scenes were shot on location in Falling Waters State Park at the edge of Florida's tallest waterfall.
The soundtrack was composed by Joseph Davenport during pre-production and principal photography, as opposed to the traditional process of scoring a film in the post-production phase. This meant that many shots were storyboarded side-by-side with each track (and often time tracks played live during shooting), which allowed for much more precisely integrated music.
All title cards were hand painted by makeup artist Jessica Libby Knapp and routinely appear on display at showings of the film.
The night scenes were shot during a single 10-hour shoot on a small beach at Falling Waters State Park. Sea turtle nesting season prevented the crew from using the production's LED lights on gulf beaches, relocating the scene north to the state park. Pine straw was raked from the entire beach, while reflective buoys in the water were pulled ashore to avoid compromising shots. Light batteries ultimately ran out, forcing the use of flashlights in their place for some shots.
The film stock used in most of the scenes is a Kodak stock not available for Super 8 cameras. 35mm strips were ultimately custom trimmed and perforated by Pro8mm for use in the production.
Spoilers
For the final underwater shot, the camera was vacuum-sealed with tape applied to the edges, while a backpack with a 25 lb weight inside was strapped to director Jake Brown, keeping him below the water's surface and allowing actor Blake Brannon to fall backwards into the water just above the camera.
