'Kung Fu Panda 3' Takes the Weekend Box Office with $41M

'Kung Fu Panda 3' Takes the Weekend Box Office with $41M
While January isn't typically a big month for box office blockbusters, there can be the occasional movie that opens big. Two weeks ago, Ride Along 2 breathed some life into the new year with a respectable $35.2 million opening frame, but last weekend, it dropped a whopping 64.7% and slipped from first to third place, with the holdover The Revenant taking the top spot in its fifth week in theaters. This weekend is shaping up to be the biggest frame of the new year so far, with three heavily-promoted new releases, Kung Fu Panda 3, Fifty Shades of Black and The Finest Hours. Box Office Mojo is reporting that Kung Fu Panda 3 took the top spot at the box office with $41 million.

Kung Fu Panda 3 is expected to easily take the top spot with a projected $48 million, which isn't terribly surprising given this franchise's pedigree of critical acclaim and box office success.

All the Times the Wayans Got It Right in Their Parody Movies

All the Times the Wayans Got It Right in Their Parody Movies
Marlon Wayans has another spoof movie, and this time he's skewering Fifty Shades of Grey with his parody Fifty Shades of Black.  Though it's a Marlon movie, Wayans has often worked with some of his famous brothers, Shawn Wayans and Keenen Ivory Wayans, to poke fun at whatever films are popular at the moment. The Scary Movie franchise, the A Haunted House franchise, Dance Flick, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka!, and Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood are among the comedies the Wayans family has given us that don't let big budget blockbusters off the hook without a little roasting. If a certain genre of movie is doing well, you can bet the Wayans have made...

'Fifty Shades of Black' Cast Share Their New Year's Resolutions

'Fifty Shades of Black' Cast Share Their New Year's Resolutions
One of the early box office hits this year was Universal's Fifty Shades of Grey, which took in over $500 million worldwide, and set the pace for the studio's record-breaking year. Unfortunately for fans of this movie, and the E.L. James novel it's based on, the sequel Fifty Shades Darker won't be hitting theaters until February 2017, but Open Road Films has a new movie that could help to fill the void, Fifty Shades of Black. The studio is helping fans kick off 2016 in the right way, with a video featuring New Year's Resolutions from Christian Black (Marlon Wayans).

These resolutions include "Become a Better Person," "Be More Generous," "Drink Less Alcohol," "Eat Healthier," "Explore New Cultures" and "Always Be Prepared." Along with these resolutions, we also get some new footage from this spoof comedy, featuring Marlon Wayans and his co-stars Kali Hawk, Mike Epps, Affion Crockett. While this movie is obviously

Watch: New Red Band Trailer For 'Fifty Shades Of Black' Welcomes You To The Play Room

If there's a trend to be parodied, it seems Marlon Wayans will make the most of the opportunity. With a couple of "Scary Movies," "Dance Flick," and some "A Haunted House" flicks under his belt, he knows this terrain well, so he's comfortable getting naughty for "Fifty Shades Of Black," and a new red-band trailer has arrived. Kali Hawk, Mike Epps, Andrew Bachelor, Affion Crockett, Jane Seymour, Fred Willard and Florence Henderson are also on board this riff on "Fifty Shades Of Grey," and as per usual, the jokes here are big and broad. If you liked any of the aforementioned movies, this will probably be a decent enough timekiller, but even then, I'm not sure you'd want to pay full movie ticket price for this. Maybe wait for it to roll onto cable. "Fifty Shades Of Black" opens on January 29, 2016.

Fifty Shades Of Black Trailer: Another Marlon Wayans Spoof

Marlon Wayans is back with yet another parody movie, and it seems like he's tapped into the Jason Blum/Blumhouse business model of making movies for low budgets and reaping big rewards at the box office. How expensive can it possibly be to recreate Fifty Shades of Grey and add some dumb jokes? Apparently only $5 million, which a film like this can easily earn back in one weekend. So I guess that means we'll continue to see more films like this, A Haunted House, and Dance Flick hit the big screen every few years.

Here's the trailer for Fifty Shades of Black, which opens in theaters on January 29th.

There’s Only One Decent Wayans Brother Movie and It Was Made 26 Years Ago

There’s Only One Decent Wayans Brother Movie and It Was Made 26 Years Ago
Amongst other things, this weekend’s release of A Haunted House 2 might make you wonder: Why are the Wayans brothers? That's not an incomplete thought, but a reflection of the existential malaise the barely-were comedians now inspire. Between this movie, its predecessor, a pair of Scary Movies, White Chicks, Dance Flick, and Little Man, Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory have racked up an embarrassment of embarrassments. Still, at least one Wayans has produced a good movie. 1988’s I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, written, directed by, and starring Keenen Ivory, is everything their recent efforts are not. While both Scary Movies and both A Haunted House movies look down on the horror genre they send up, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka lovingly sends up tropes used in blaxploitation films like Shaft, Dolemite, and Super Fly. In his film, Keenen Ivory broke the genre down to a main theme: black protagonists'

'New Girl': 5 things we'd like to see from Damon Wayans Jr.

'New Girl': 5 things we'd like to see from Damon Wayans Jr.
Now that Damon Wayans Jr. has signed on for the rest of this season of New Girl, we can safely look forward to even more Coach — and even more opportunities for Damon Wayans Jr. to do his thing. And by “thing,” well, we mean the five following Wayans Jr.-isms we’d love to see him pull off during his extra guest starring time:

1. Pirouettes

Wayans Jr. is a pirouetting pro. Sure, that’s not an actual position, but boy, can that man twirl. We can see it now: a Jess and Coach twirl-off. Better yet, a Nick and Coach twirl-off.

September Preview

September Preview
The month of September typically serves as a transition period between the big-budget blockbusters of the Summer and the high-minded prestige fare of the Fall. As a result, September releases tend to be fairly modest, and September is consistently the lowest-grossing month of the year at the domestic box office. Even with appealing sequels Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and Insidious Chapter 2, this upcoming month will be no different. Without much help from Summer holdovers, it's unlikely that September 2013 tops September 2011's $603.5 million monthly record.September 6The only major nationwide release on the first weekend of September is Riddick, which marks the third time that Vin Diesel has portrayed the titular character. A year before Diesel starred in The Fast and the Furious, he appeared as Riddick in Pitch Black, which earned $39.2 million on its way to becoming something of a cult classic. In 2004, he was back in The Chronicles of Riddick,

Tom Cruise lays waste to the opposition in Oblivion

Studio bosses are left wondering what went right as the science-fiction story brings home a surprise result

The winner

Reviews were mixed, and the early April release date suggested a movie falling short of the blockbuster premier league, but there was nothing puny about the opening-weekend box office for Oblivion: £3.36m, plus Wednesday/Thursday previews totaling £1.60m. The five-day £4.96m debut compares with £2.79m for GI Joe: Retaliation from a couple of weeks ago, and a previews-inflated £3.58m opening for star Tom Cruise's previous effort Jack Reacher in late December. Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski's earlier Tron: Legacy debuted with £1.97m back in 2010. Cruise also has a strong track record in the sci-fi genre. War of the Worlds debuted in July 2005 with £8.64m, and Minority Report in July 2002 with £4.51m.

Studios always review results for all their releases, and now Universal is in the happy position of wondering what went right with Oblivion.

Box office report: 'Zero Dark Thirty' tops chart with $24 million; 'A Haunted House' beats 'Gangster Squad'

Box office report: 'Zero Dark Thirty' tops chart with $24 million; 'A Haunted House' beats 'Gangster Squad'
After weeks of controversy in limited release, Sony’s $40 million Osama Bin Laden assassination film, Zero Dark Thirty, shot into first place with $24.0 million this weekend following five Oscar nominations (though not one for director Kathryn Bigelow) and an expansion from 60 to 2,937 theaters. After four weekends, the well-reviewed drama has earned $29.5 million total, and given its omnipresence during awards season, there’s no telling how high it could ultimately climb. $100 million is certainly not out of the question.

Zero Dark Thirty, which earned an “A-” CinemaScore, finished in the same range as Act of Valor, another recent Navy Seal film,

‘A Haunted House’ Review

A Haunted House is the first raunchy parody concocted by Marlon Wayans (he’s the star, co-writer and producer) without assistance from his brothers Shawn and Keenen Ivory. Together, the three have brought us spoofs like Scary Movie 1 & 2 and Dance Flick – in addition to non-pc comedies that people love-to-hate (White Chicks, LiTTLEMAN) – but does the “magic” vanish when it’s just Marlon, cracking sex gags and fart jokes while taking potshots at the found-footage supernatural horror movie sub-genre?

Surprisingly, Haunted House does call back to the Wayans’ breakout comedy Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, with elements of culturally and racially-based satirical humor aimed primarily at the recent slate of found-footage movies boasting predominantly caucasian casts. The problem is, well… everything else.

Story-wise (in case you care): The shenanigans involve Malcolm ...

A Haunted House: Film Review

A Haunted House: Film Review
Found-footage horror movies are long overdue for parody, but the blandly titled A Haunted House fails to rise to the comedic occasion. A few funny gags notwithstanding, this effort co-written by and starring Marlon Wayans -- who has more than a little experience with this sort of thing (Scary Movie and its sequels as well as Dance Flick) -- too often settles for raunchiness instead of wit. Concentrating on the Paranormal Activity franchise with a little of The Devil Inside and countless other exorcism movies thrown in, the story centers on Malcolm (Wayans) and his longtime girlfriend Kisha (Essence Atkins) moving
