Sivan, at around the age of 20, is a native of the Southeastern region of Anatolia. His father Saho is the leader of the Givdanli tribe who stays distant both to the state and to the insurgents who are influent in the region, in order to secure its existence. One day, Sivan meets with the girl he loves, Berfin in a field around the village. The same day the field is burnt by saboteurs and the whole harvest of the village is wasted. The investigation initiated after the incident, changes Sivan's life drastically. Taken in for an interrogation, Sivan is caught between the police and the insurgents. Thinking his son's life is in peril, Saho assures Sivan's fleeing out of the country. Taken to Germany by the help of a illegal network, Sivan is located in a refugee camp. However, in this new land whose language is alien to him, Sivan will go through an ordeal which will add a new dimension to the residue of his experiences in Turkey. Written by omayra73@yahoo.com
Mülteci is a sad tale of a young innocent dreamer named Shivan. It is true that our film's leading man would appear as more of an idealist artist yet he cannot necessarily be pigeonholed as an ordinary asylum seeker. His life takes a turn for the worst when strange circumstances in his native land force him to become a refugee.Like many others refugees who share his kind of fate,Shivan enters developed nation of Germany in order to escape oppression in his motherland. This is the beginning of a horrendous experience as he comes to know that in the German refugee camp where he has landed there are many helpless souls like him some real, some fake from different nationalities Russians, Chechens,Kurds and Africans.Refugee is a film that provides us with an honest account of the cruel, senseless tragedies which force an ordinary human being to convert himself into a refugee devoid of any kind of respect.Multeci is a meaningful film which tries to ask how refugees are created ? In the film,we are shown how people from developed nations view refugees. All this might appear fine but the real issue to which everybody must draw attention involves the topic whether adequate structures have been created to understand the plight of refugees ? Things take a bad turn for this film when it steers itself towards the melodrama part.According to United Nations there are currently 11.4 million refugees in the world. It is to all these faceless, hapless, nameless and rather unfortunate human beings that Turkish director Reis Celik has dedicated his film.Film critic Lalit Rao spoke to Reis Celik after watching this film during 13th IFFK 2009.
