Storyline

Filmed over five years in Kansas City, this documentary follows four kids - beginning at ages 4, 7, 12, and 15 - as they redefine "coming of age." These kids and their families reveal intimate realities of how gender is re-shaping the family next door in a never-before-told chronicling of growing up transgender in the heartland. The film is a nuanced examination of how families tussle, transform, and sometimes find unexpected purpose in their identities as transgender families. Lighthearted and deeply moving, this story teaches us something new about being human. Written by Sharon Liese

Complex. Genuine. Enlightening.

It's without saying that most of us have never seen a documentary like this. To see years of these young peoples lives bound together was a feat. The documentary shows us what needed to be known, what it is like to be a human who happens to be trans.

Ranging from various ages, demographics, family backgrounds, etc. Regardless of ones personal views, I can speak from my own experience when I say I received a great deal of knowledge throughout this documentary.

What captured my attention most was the distinct differences between each individual captured through this documentary. The discussions are meaningful and the evolution of these individuals is nothing short of an enlightening message of how life changes us and how each of those who participated in the film live distinct lives despite the possibility of sharing a common identity.

My advice is anyone is to keep a clear and understanding mind as to what we are privy to watching. I have recommended this to any one who has a desire to see the diversity of the society in which we all live in.

Thank you.
