- PANQUIACO is a hybrid movie that mixes documentary with fiction. The film was born from an investigation of oral history, myths of indigenous characters before colonization, and forgotten figures of Panamanian history. For many native groups, the meaning of the sea goes much further, the sea is the place of origin, what we are and where we come from. The poem of creation according to the Koguis states: "Everything was dark. There was no sun, no moon, no animals, no plants. The sea was everywhere. The sea was the mother. It was the spirit, the memory and thought". "This film is a reflection on the conflict of identity of my country, a conflict difficult to express with words, however, a topic little discussed and philosophized in our region. How does our geographical position affect our identity? "PANQUIACO tells the story of Cebaldo, an indigenous "dule" of Panama who works as a fishmonger in a town in northern Portugal and suffers from nostalgia. In his solitude, memories take him away from his daily life, plunging him into an internal journey of a return to his town in Guna Yala where a botanical doctor confronts him with the impossibility of returning to the past. The film has the participation of Cebaldo de Leon Smith and Fernando Fernandez. It was recorded in the dule community of Ustupu, in Guna Yala, the Wounaan community of Campo Laurel in Darien, and in the town of Vila do Conde in Portugal. The communities of each place that were part of the film as protagonists and behind the camera as part of the production team.—Maria Isabel Burnes
